No spark from coil to distrubuter


Disconnect the ignition coil output wire at the distributor cap.
Connect a spark plug to the end of the ignition coil output wire which you just disconnected.
Connect a ground wire to the threaded portion of the spark plug.
Disconnect the ignition coil ground wire from the negative terminal on the coil (Green Wire).
Connect one end of a ground wire to the ignition coil negative terminal.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Tap the other end of the ignition coil ground wire jumper on an good grounding point (for example the battery negative terminal) and look for sparks at the spark plug that correspond to the frequency of your tapping of the ground wire.
If you have a good spark at the spark plug, the ignition coil is good.
If you don't get a good spark, check for approximately 12 VDC from the coil positive terminal (black wire) to ground with the ignition switch in the ON position. You should also get approximately 12 VDC from the coil negative terminal (Green wire) to ground
Ignition Coil Resistance Check

In addition to the test above, you may elect to perform an ignition coil resistance check as confirmation of the coil's condition.

Check the ignition coil primary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the positive (Black wire) and negative (Green wire) terminals on the coil. The resistance should be 0.4 to 0.6 ohms.
Check the ignition coil secondary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the coil output terminal and the ignition coil negative terminal. The resistance should be 5000 to 7200 ohms.

You may have a bad coil or bad ground or wire connection

1990 Dodge Ramcharger won't start. Battery output 12v, voltage across coil terminals 6v, voltage output at coil port to coil wire 6v, voltage of coil wire output to distributor 6v. Engine will c


There should be a small white ceramic block on the firewall - this component cuts the battery voltage from 12 to 9 volts for the coil and ignition system. It has 4 wires and is called a ballast resistor.
You may need a book with the wiring diagram to be able to test it. You should have battery voltage going in and something like 9 volts coming out.
You can also run a wire with a fuse from the battery to the positive side of the coil to check the system. Disconnect the factory wire from the coil first.

My 1995 jeep grand cherokee has power starter is turning over but jeep wont start.


Please check if there is spark at the output of the ignition coil, situated on the left side (passenger side) of the engine.
1. Get a paper clip.
2. Remove coil wire from the distributor cap. Double check that the other end of the wire is firmly snapped onto the coil terminal
3. Place paper clip inside the loose coil wire end, making sure it makes contact with the coil wire conductor, and let it protrude from the end of the wire.
4. Using pliers with insulated handles, hold the end of the wire with he protruding clip ~3/8 in. from the terminal of the cap where you disconnected the coil wire,while an assistant turns the key for 3-4 seconds.
Caution: Stay clear of the fan and any rotating pulleys.
5. Is there a spark arcing from the coil wire paper clip to the terminal on the cap?
6. If so, what color?
7. It should be bright white in color.
8. If blue or orange, the coil may be at fault.
9. If no arc, the coil is bad.

There is a tool available at the auto parts storethat can be clipped onto the coil wire and it will indicate the condition of the of the coil output.

How do I replace the ignition coil in my 2002 ford taurus



Removal & Installation

3.0L (VIN S) Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Unplug the engine control sensor wiring connectors from the ignition coil and the radio ignition interference capacitor.
  3. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires from the coil by squeezing the locking tabs, then twist the tab and pull upwards.
  4. Unfasten the four ignition coil retainers and remove the coil and the coil ground wire the radio ignition interference capacitor. Save the capacitor and coil ground wire for re-installation of the coil assembly.
  5. Wipe the coil towers with a clean cloth dampened with soap and water. Remove any soap film and dry with compressed air. Inspect the coil for cracks, carbon tracking, dirt or damage and replace as necessary.

To install:
  1. Place the coil, capacitor and the coil ground wire onto its mounting location on the right hand valve cover.
  2. Install the coil assembly retainers and tighten to 45-61 inch lbs. (5-7 Nm)..
  3. Apply dielectric compound D7AZ-19A331-A or its equivalent to the spark plug wire boots.
  4. Attach the spark plug wires to their proper terminals on the coil and make sure the boots are firmly seated so that the locking tabs engage.
  5. Attach the engine control wiring connectors to the ignition coil and the radio ignition interference capacitor.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable, start the vehicle and check for proper operation.

if the other coils are functioning, then voltage to the coil pack is ok. removing the spark plug wire from the suspected bad coil with no change in engine performance is a reliable procedure to check for a bad coil.

I have a 2001 ford f150 4x4 .6 triton misfiring


The way that I usually test coils or plug wires is to use an insulated plug wire puller and pull each plug wire (one at a time) to see if the engine speed changes. If you disconnect one wire and nothing changes, you probably have found the defective wire or coil.
You can also use a plug wire tester (neon type) to see if you have a spark. Can also hook up a timing light to a coil wire and it will trigger if coil is good. It will not work if coil is bad.

Ignition coil wire arching & zaping sound in the area


Either coil has a crack in it or bad coil wire make sure coil wire is snaped in all the way if it is, try new coil wire, but chk. for crack on coil.
