Loud Electric Screwdriver Sound coming from the Engine

2004 Dodge Neon SXT - 41,000 miles. Just started this evening while sitting idle in the driveway. It sounded like a loud electric screwdriver or dental drill sound coming from the engine while I was sitting with it on in the driveway. It drove fine until I came home and was sitting in my driveway with it on for 10 minutes or so while I was talking on my cell phone. There was some smoke that looked like it came from the front left side near the driver's side headlight. My dad checked all the fluids and belts, and all are okay. He did not see anything dripping or anything underneath the car. What could cause this problem to happen?

Sounds like maybe a belt tensioner pulley or an idler pulley may have locked up or bearing going out causing the pulley to lock up and burn the belt which would cause the smoke

You will need to open the hood and watch what is going on. Take it out for a run, park it the same way. The smoke thing got me beat! You will need to see where it is coming from. Frankster016

It sounds like it was just the electric fan turning on, they can and will turn on even if car is turned off.

My 2004 dodge neon sxt makes a loud grinding and rattling noise when i accelerate. the car is vibrating

I had the same problem with a Saturn I had and I would check the motor mount. If its coming loose it can damage a lot of other things costing more than what you would need.

I have a 2005 Dodge neon sxt and in the morning when I start it the engine makes a really loud knocking for about 15 seconds then it gets softer. The noise is there all day. I have about 66k miles on it...

This is probably a bent pushrod or warped head or something of that sort. SERIOUS problems. Take it to a mechanic. Knocking of any sort is a bad, BAD sign. Good luck.

I have a 2005 dodge neon sxt, in the morning when I start it up I hear a loud knocking noise from the engine but after about 15 seconds it gets softer but is still there all day when I'm driving around.

It is probably your lifters sticking. Check your engine oil level and if thats fine, then add some oil detergent/additive that says it will "reduce engine knock and free sticky lifters" run with that additive for a couple hundred miles or until the noise gets better. then replce your oil after that without using the additive

Starter?

I know it sounds daft, but get a mate to turn the engine over, touch the starter motor, thats the round thing on the bottom of the engine, sorry i that sounds patronising, tap it softly with a peice of wood or a light hammer, the solinod is stuck, that will release it. Don't be scared to give it a whack, but only when someone is turning the engine over or it won't work.

It seems like you have a vacuum leak in a hose some where. Check under the hood for any rubber hoses that are dry-rotted, cracks, or sharp bends in any of them.
