1997 ford taurus steering problems

i think i may have oversteered my taurus. a couple of nights ago i was making a u-turn and as i pulled out of it, right was left and left was right. did i reverse the hydraulics or something by turning too hard? i heard it strain but nothing sounded broken. it is very dangerous taking the kids to school and trying to avoid crossing children in the school cross-walks. anybody have any ideas? i want to do the work myself to save money and i bought a tool set from Walgreen's so i think i am set on tools. will take any help.

it sounds like the rack and pinion went out, had the same thing happen to me on my 1997... first thing, to do it yourself you really should get a repair manuel from a local parts store. changing the rack isn't a simple job you Will be able to see the procedure and the tools involved.... please rate this if it helped thx...
