This indicate a problem has occured in the Dynamic Sstability And Traction Control System. You must get the system control module scanned for the fault code. There is a big problem with this system based on the number of complaints seen on line, average cost to repair is about $1000.00

What is DSTC

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8mniiBdHik Here's a short clip that explains what it is.
And a text found online
DSTC
Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) is an even more sophisticated stability system to improve active safety by also intervening and counteracting any tendency to skid.

If the car makes a sudden movement and loses its directional line, or enters a corner too fast and the rear end starts to turn the car inwards, DSTC gently returns it to the right line. This is done by applying the brakes on one or more wheels.

DSTC works through the ABS system, which has been further developed.

A number of yaw angle sensors monitor the rotational speed of all four wheels, the steering wheel angle and the directional behaviour of the car.

The DSTC processor receives the signals and compares the actual behaviour of the car with the desired behaviour. Any deviation from the norm, such as the rear wheels starting to break away, and the system intervenes and makes corrections, activating the brakes on the wheel that will bring the car back in line. If necessary, the system also reduces engine torque, like STC.

In a way, it would be true to say that DSTC is able to compensate for the driver's mistakes up to a certain point, as it counteracts and prevents skidding when the driver has already started to lose control.

The system is particularly effective if the driver has to brake hard and steer away at the same time, like the well-known elk test. The system counteracts any tendencies to skid and returns the car to its original course.

DSTC works through the ABS system which has been further developed to incorporate this system. In addition to more relief valves and a more powerful microprocessor, a brake reinforcement unit with electronic activation, sensors for side acceleration, yaw rate and steering wheel angle have been added.
Hope it helps.

Volvo v70 2008, warning message dstc service required comes on intermittently

Dear Sir the Fault you have is all about your Dynamic Stability and Traction Control. The sensors fitted on your wheels which are checking the wheel speed usually get gummed with road dirt and debris and cause error to trigger. Ask Volvo mechanic to clean the sensors and the problem would resolved.

Why does the dstc light stays on the dashboard?

The DSTC system by Volvo means Dynamic Stability & Traction Control, and is the equivalent of the ESP system (means the Electronic Stability Program). If the DSTC lights on the dashboard permanently the DSTC system is faulty. You must access the DSTC Electronic Control Unit (ECU) memory to pull out all DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes), using diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car. Then you will be full informed about bad pieces (e.g.: front right wheel abs sensor interrupted, ...). After bad pieces replacement you will be able to erase all faults memored by DSTC ECU, in other words reset the DSTC system and turn off the warning lamp on dashboard.

Want to know what a light means, and can i fix it myself

pg26b.jpg pg26c.jpg Risk for slippery conditions
If the warning light comes on and stays on, this indicates that traction with the road surface is reduced. Drive with caution. If this light flashes, it indicates that the DSTC system is working to restore traction to one or more of the wheels. Reduced Stability Control
If the green indicator light in the DSTC button goes out, DSTC has reduced effect because the system had been switched off with the button in the center console. The text DSTC SPIN CONTROL OFF will be displayed in the text window.
