Front hub spline sticking out in my 93 bronco

Hello David Rowland,

Thanks for this question.

Back in the old days... Wow... This is upsetting...
(that was the extent of PLASTIC on the RUBICON)

There was a time when I knew these things... I helped a couple of buddies start a SUCESSFULL 4-wheel drive SHOP... but by the time Rubicon was becoming popular... I automatically knew
these things (the name) DANA SPICER was eluding me
but it is starting to come back. I did these things (4 wheel mechanic) because people that were dear to me liked it...
I enjoyed putting them together.

I have only been off rode a couple of times (in non-military equipment) and it was NEVER with fore thought... but always life & *****... Breaking'em...NOT MY cup of TEA.
(enough about this old guy).

ONE OF THE right people... on fixya is Juriy Hawrylak

I don't actually think anything is sticking out... I think the end cap from your HUB-LOCK is missing... and I thin if you are resourceful you can find the right manufacturer... and buy the part.

Just for visual assurances I'm going to put an eBay hub on the bottom of this article

I have a 1986 ramcharger royal se w150 4wd. What type of front axle does it have? dana 44,dana 60, automatic or full time locking hubs?

should be dana 44's.... the is a front axle disconnect on the tube operated by vacuum ...when shifted to 4wd, the slide engages the 2 axles to make one

What front axle is on a 1981 ford f-150 4x4

If it is a IFS (Independent Front Suspension) system...it is either a
Dana 44 or a Dana 50.

If it is a monoaxle suspension, then it is a Dana 44-9F or a Dana 44-1F.

-->All AMC 20s have a 8 7/8" R&P and use a 29 spline shafts. The AMC 20 R&P is 3/8" bigger than the Dana 44, but it uses smaller shafts, smaller axle tubes, and the CJ version comes with weaker two piece shafts. The AMC20 uses a 29 spline shaft where as the later Dana 44 uses a 30 spline shaft. The AMC 20 housing tends to flex a lot which can cause breakage. This can be remedied by welding the tubes and/or adding gussets. The reason the AMC 20 flexes more than the Dana 44 is the shorter differential housing and smaller axle tubes. It's other flaw is the CJ version uses the two piece axle made up of a hub and a shaft. The hub end tends to break off under load which has created the market for one piece AMC 20 axle shafts. Unfortunately, the shafts are expensive ($350+ USD) and in some cases a special bearing must be used.
amc20co_.gif -->Identifying the gear ratio of an AMC 20 is a bit tricky. Dana axles normally have a tag on the left of the diff cover with the gear ratio at the time of build. The AMC axles have a code that has to be looked up in a table. The code is stamped on the housing boss to the left of the diff cover right near the axle tube. Good part about the stamp is it tends to stay readable longer than the tag, but you have to know the code. Since there are conflicts between what a code means for a narrow track and what it means for a wide track, don't count solely on the code to identify an axle. Bring a tape measure or know the source of the part. You may have to scrape away a lot of mud, paint, and rust to uncover the code. If you can't find the code on the rear, check the tag on the front axle. Both axles should be geared the same. The R&P ratio ranges supported by the carriers are 2.73 and 3.31-5.13. The 5.13 gear ratio is not available for the Dana 30 though, so it is rare to see it. 4.56s are the lowest common ratio between the Dana 30 and AMC 20. 5.13s are available for the Dana 44.
CJ AMC 20 The CJs used two versions of the AMC 20, the narrow track from '76-'81 and the wide track from '82-'86. Both versions use keyed, two piece shaft/hub design and 5 on 5.5" wheel bolt pattern. Supplies of AMC 20s were exhausted in 1986 and some Dana 44s were used instead in the last of the CJ-7s.
From 1976-1978 a larger 11x2" drum brakes was used on the AMC 20. After 1978, a 10x1.75" drum was used.
SJ AMC 20 The Wagoneer and full size Cherokee also used a narrow and wide track version of the AMC 20. Both SJ versions used once piece shafts and 6 on 5.5" wheel bolt pattern. Since the length and bolt pattern is different from the CJ version, the SJ shafts are not compatible without resplining and redrilling. I've never heard of anyone going to the trouble.

Ford 250 auto/lock hubs

I have the same hubs on my truck as what you have. I have been told it can be done you just have to know if you have a dana 50 or 60 front axle. The warn hubs i'm sure are a better quality hub but if your worried about the auto feature of your current hubs. That is vacuum accuated when you 4 wheel drive is engaged. And there fore vacuum engaged. Mine used to work great but after a lot of mudding sand got into seals and vacuum didn't work anymore so i treat them as free/lock hubs.

Front manual locking hubs 1990 f-250

Hey, I also have a 90 F-250, manual locking hubs. My repair manual says to 'be sure to apply a light coat of high temp. wheel bearing grease to the splines of the axleshaft and the components of the locking hub.'

Good lighting will help. Also, use a brake cleaner spray or penetrant to clean things off so you can see .I have a 1996 F150 with push button 4WD with manual locking hubs. Dana 44 axle. Yours may be similar. For front wheel, remove locking ring just inside the inner edge of the hub housing (once you remove the manual hub locking switch, 6 screws on mine, could be 3 on others). Not conspicuous, took me awhile to find. Your hub locking assembly will appear to be recessed just behind its edge goes around outer circumferance. Next, Remove the locking spring (looks like a washer) around the very end of the spline shaft. This is towards the center around the shaft. There is a silver looking retainer ring you have too pull it over, use very small standard screwdriver. Locking mechanism should pull right out after that, giving you access to the outer bearing adjustment nut. Use 4 prong wheel bearing nut socket readily available at auto parts stores. Remove adjustment nut. Next, remove spacer that fits into keyway on shaft. There is nothing holding it on, just pull it off. Beneath that there is another bearing nut, remove this also with 4 prong socket. Just pull hub off after removed. Sometimes rust will keep you from removing at this point. Just get a good penetrant lubricant, spray on and let soak, repaeat if necessary . You can also get a plastic 4lb+ dead blow hammer to assist. Bang on rotor from inside to out. Be prepared to service wheel bearings, they fit into the inside of the rotor/hub assembly and will be dislodged when you remove it. This is as far as I have gotten myself. Good Luck.
