Make sure the tire pressures are at the recommended pressure. Check for worn steering/suspension components particularly the front/rear stabilizer links as one or more may be broken.Has the alignment ever been checked rot proper angles?

Rear end body sways back and forth on my 2002 jeep grand cherokee

check the track bar bushings for play in them, also check to make sure that the sway bar links are not broken, also if the rear axle has leaf springs for suspension it then could be the rear shackle bushings.

HOW MUCH IS TO FIX A BROKEN REAR SWAY BAR?

Broken rear sway bar? Were we doing some rock crawling? You can order them online for around $150, and very simple to replace. Shop around to have someone put one in for you, as this is a very simple job and takes maybe 30 minutes to do. One thing to keep in mind, your swaybar end links may need to be replaced also while they are in there. Also the rear swaybar bushings may need to be replaced also. Endlinks are about $37 ea for Moogs. Bushings are around $8 for both sides.

Broken rear sway bar

Unbolt the sway bar end links, then the two bushing clamps on the frame. It will come down so you can replace it. Never try to repair it

Auto parts place says I need the rear sway bar replaced - is this the same as the links and bushings? It's a bar in the middle of the car that leads to both wheels in the rear. If it does need to be...

yes, unless the bar is broken. Are the links broken? Just replace whatever is broken or worn out. Usually the bushings under the holddown clamps and the links and/or link bushings.

What is the purpose of the swine bar? The bar right by the tire. it has broke in my vehicle.

You mean the sway bar? If so, the sway bar or roll bar, or sometimes called the stabilizer bar. The sway bar has two functions.
  1. To prevent body roll or lean in a turn.
  2. It is used to control the handling of the vehicle and is tuned to your specific vehicle based on many characteristics.
You most definitely need to replace the broken sway bar. A vehicle with a broken sway bar is not a safe vehicle. The handling is not what it should be and this can be dangerous if you have to make a quick maneuver. Replace it, ASAP.

Rear shocks replacement?

i assume that this is a sl2 or a sc2 both have a rear sway bar and possibly have binding sway bar links. remove rear wheel and find link that goes from rear sway bar to strut and make sure it is able to pivot. if they are binding they make a lot of noise and need to be replaced
