Question about 1999 Mercury Sable

Need to verify cable or not for speedo

Need to disassemble the dash to find out if I have a speedo cable or not so I can replace my speed sensor, unless someone can tell me how to verify what I need without doing this.

I think I need to change my speedo cable....not working....96 nissan pick-up truck...2 wheel dr.

They don't use speedo cables anymore, all electrical. On or in the transmission there is a VSS- vehicle speed sensor, and it sends a signal by wire to the dash cluster, and also to the engine computer.
If you recall, the speedo cable would attach at the center rear of the speedometer gauge. I don't remember just when, but all car makers stopped using cables to indicate speed, I think it was in the '80's when they went to electrical devices rather than cables. You can use a voltmeter to run tests on the sensor and/or the wires, but I don't know the procedure. You would have to consult a repair manual for that. It is not uncommon for the sensor to fail, but could also be a wiring problem, or the speedo gauge itself, but that is less common.

Fix speedometer cable

the vehicle speed sensor is most allways located on the tail shaft of transmision passenger side not to be confused with axle speed sensor (for ABS brakes) on the top of rear differential

but if your speedo don't work there is a tech serv bull on in dash speedo's for your model year , basicly it needs replaced
ck with your ford dealer it might be still under warrenty

I have a 2001 ford esscort zx2 speedo stopped working got the code off the check engine saying i need a new speed sensor after replacing the speed sensor speedo still doesnt work

Many of the newer cars have more then one speed sensor. In fact some have as many as four of them. Did you disconnect your negative battery cable when you replaced the bad sensor? If you did not do that there is a chance you burned up the sensor you replaced. I hope this helps you out.

The speedometer and odometer on both will not work. Are both my speedo cable and cluster in need of replacing? or is there another problem

It may be the cable but its hard to say because i dont know the year, make and model of this car, newwer cars use a speed sensor and not a cable so i would start by checking the speedo cable or the speed sensor on the trany, good luck.

Why wont my speedometer or odometerwork on my 92 jeep wrangler

i have had same problem on other vehicle's .generaly there are two type of speedo cables , one is a cable that runs from back of speedomiter to the gear box , you will need to remove dash to get at this one , but most commenly they are electric , which means all you need to do is replace the speed sensor on gearbox , there isnt much to replacing this part , usually this is located on drivers side of gearbox about middle bottom to middle top of gearbox , it will have only a few screws holding it in place , mainly they use just one . all you need to do is remove it by undoing screw and unplugging wire harness , which usually only has one or two wire conected to it , when you have un done speedo sensor unit , you will most likely find that a small plastic gear has stripped its teeth , just buy a new unit and refit this will usaully fix your problem .

maybe get a work shop manual for your vehicle so you can best locate and remove this device .
good luck , not many cars use the cable type , if it is a cable then just replace it as it usually breaks of at either end inside the cable .
good luck , i am sure if you replace the speedo sensor first it will bve o.k

Speedometer not working

First you need go to your local parts store, buy a manual on this model pickup, and read it. The reading is to help you understand how things work together and help if you attempt the repair. Next, if the dash is electric, or digital it properly is a electric unit in that it will use a pulse type sensor to provide the speedo signal for speed input. 2. It a mechanical input if there is a cable that connect the speedo with the transmission towards the rear of the tranny, it usaully screws on it. The cable binds and breaks are most common problem, take the cable off at trans, take a drill and attach it to the cable, spin it up see if speed shown, if not then you the cable good if not broken, and there a problem in the speedo itself. If so, either get it rebuilt or by new unit. If its the electric unit, and the dash does turn on, verify by other gauge working, if so check the sensor that provides the signal.
