Do I have to reset the timing belt if I do this?

No you will not have to reset the timing belt. I would not use the rope down a spark plug hole as there would be a good chance of bending a valve or rod.
Find some way of stopping the engine from rotating at the fly wheel or flex plate.

Replacing 2004 cavalier crank sensor, i can't locate the best way to replace it. need a diagram or where i can find it.

The crankshaft position sensor should be located on a small metal bracket very close to the harmonic balancer which is attached to the end of the crankshaft. If you are having trouble locating the harmonic balancer, it is the lowest pulley on the passenger side of the engine, in the center line of the engine.
