Question about 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT

1 Answer

2002 Pontiac Grand Am Se 3.4L turning over like brand new, but not starting. Tryied the key trick, the fuel pump relay is fine and ran fine since last september untill I went to my girlfriends last night and as I was going to leave, I hit the auto start a couple times and didn't here the car start like normal. So went outside and tryied it by the key and still does nothing but turn over but still wont start. I know that you cant always hear the fuel pump on newer vehicles, but its a 2002. I would think you could but mine doesnt seem to make a sound when I turn the key. And the security light doesnt come on. Think it might be just a bad fuel pump?

It sounds exactly like the fuel pump. Are you positive you're getting spark at the plugs? If so change the fuel pump. Good Luck!

2002 pontiac grand am not starting

My brother's 02 grand am 2.2L would not start. Car has spark, fuel pump works,
good battery, plugs and plug boots new, new fuse for the fuel pump in the fuse block under the hood, everything seems to work but car won't start, crank sensor fine timing chain fine etc... The problem was a security issue. Security light on dash was blinking when trying to start the car but car won't start. The fix for me was Attempt to start the car by turning the key to the Start/Run Position.
Observe that the vehicle fails to start and that the security light is blinking.
Release key to the 'ON/Accessory' Position. (DO NOT turn key to the 'off' position.)
Allow the vehicle to sit with the key in the 'ON/Accessory' Position for no less than 12 minutes.
Turn key to off position and allow the vehicle to remain in the 'OFF' position for no less than 30 seconds. Then try to start the car. I was surprised this worked for me. 2002 pontiac grand am 2.2L. Hope this helps for you folks.

2000 pontiac grand am stalls

The pump should run quietly. Do you hear a load hum while driving? When it stalls, with the key on and everything quiet in the car you should hear a faint hum when you turn just the key on ( not cranking the engine over ) this last only a few seconds. If you hear that. The pump is working you might have another problem. Let me know

Here are a few areas to check: possible wire harness having bare insulation and rubbing on chassis. Loose connections at relay plug at fuse box. high resistance short to ground at fule pump

2001 pontiac grand will not start all of a sudden. ran fine this

The problem may be the security issue. Do you see a security light? Dust gets into the ignition tumbler and causes a bad contact with the sensor prompting a false security issue.

I had the same problem and thought it was a fuel pump issue, but after a $500 replacement ordeal, I later encountered the same issue again.

To resolve:
Insert the key and turn on ignition tumbler to ACC on (Position prior to engaging the starter)
Wait around ~15-20 minutes (The security light will change... I believe it will flash when the security reset...it's been a long time...sorry)
Afterward, turn the ignition tumbler and off
Your card should start there after

Tumbler maintain: Blow some compress air to prevent this incident from happening.

Hopefully this will resolve your issue without the need of spending any further $$$!
