Question about 1999 Lexus RX 300

It dies if idling in D, but is fine in N....

Everything seemed alright, and then the check engine light suddenyl came on at a red light, so I turned around and headed home. Every time I stopped moving, the car would die if it idled in D for more than 30 seconds or so. It was fine if I shifted into N or R, and it seemed to drive normally. Any idea what the issue could be?

I just had the oil changed and cabin air filter replaced. Possibly related to the current problem?

The problem is with idle and mixture settings.
On a carb model you would fix this setting up the carburetor screws.
On an electronic injection vehicle like yours, you need to scan the electronic comtrol module that controls the injection.
You need to have the car ECM (electronic control module) connected to a code reader, this will return you an error code telling what the problem is.
The procedure can be performed at any qualified garage.

There is an automatic torque convertor on those models, that puts a little higher strain on the engine,
when idling. you can either get that checked or have your mechanic tweak the idle up..

Zack, did the Engine light come on?? If you can get it over to one of the big-box auto parts stores, get them to check for any codes. May be Throttle position sensor (TPS), cracked hoses at connections.

If it runs fine and the idle is the only problem you could try idling it up some with the idle set screw on the throttle body it sounds like it may be a little bit out of time those toyotas have a fine lins on the timing.

IAC idler air control valve bumps up the RPM and doesnot let the engine to die, how ever if its not the IAC then Ide be looking at the TEMP sensor which migh have a fair line crack or may be the MAF mass air flow sensor might be bad, seems like the engine is not geting air, check the air filter first.
