Question about 1995 GMC Suburban

1 Answer

I have a 95 gmc suburban and I have no rear lights except the top small strip when I push the brakes. Headlights work and turn signals work fine in the front unless the headlights are on then the turn signals blink fast in the frontonly. I just replaced the brake switch and the entire hazard/turn signal switch that goes in the column. However the brake switch does not have the pin thats supposed to be on it to keep it on the bar but it's on there pretty good (I know this because last time it was loose I couldn't take truck out if park until I pushed it back on) please help I've spent so much money and still have no brakes :(

Nice that you already did this and never mentioned it in the problem post, well then the emergency flasher circuit is the next thing

I'm sorry when i did that it was on my phone and thats how it came out. And i though by saying "I just replaced the brake switch and the entire hazard/turn signal switch that goes in the column" clearly stated that i replaced that part. Also I'm sorry i didn't mention this befor but when i turn on my hazards the rear lights all flash but not as bright as they should be. That is the only time anything in the rear works.

and i just noteiced that when i have the headlights on and i push the brake the little brake light in the rear on the top comes on but does not go off when i release the brake and does not turn off until i turn the headlights off and when i turn them back on it's still off until i hit the brake again. All of this started with the brake swtich under the brake went out and i replaced it and everything worked fine. but the hazard light switch was broken and had a bolt wedged in the space it goes to hold it in place but the bolt came loose and nothing worked so thats why i replaced that whole turn signal/hazard switch. after it was replaced and the brakes did not work then i wiggled the brake switch box and touched the brakes and the brake lights in the rear came on for just a second and went back off but i just replaced the brake switch a couple days ago. I'm trying to give as much information as i can to get this fixed. Thank you

Get yourself a factory service manual and trace the circuit out to eh lights is my best suggestion at this point. This is a hands on job.

It was the ground wire the black one near the rear bumper that controls the lh and rh lamps. Thanks though!

I have a 1990 Chevy Suburban v1500. All lights work except for the Brake Lights and Turn Signals. The Blinker switch on steering column is broken, other than that everything is fine.

Yes, the brake light signal on American cars is routed through the turn signal switch. A new switch should restore both your turns and your brake lights.
American cars use the same bulb filament and same wire to the rears for both brakes and turns. Press the brakes when turning and both rear brakes will light, but since one side travels through the flasher relay, that side will blink, while the other side has a steady light.

I have a 1999 gmc suburban 4x4. All rear lights and license plate lights are not working. All fuses are good as well as all light bulbs. Any ideas what the problem could be?

Sounds like a faulty signal switch. Here's a way to check it,hold the brake pedal down while pushing down on and wiggling the hazard switch. If the brake lights come then replace the signal switch.

No Tail lights. Or brake lights(when the headlights are on). HELP!!!

I think you have a bad ground at the back on both rear lights or their earth out on the same connection but these american cars use a funny system where the stop lights are the indicators and not a seperate yellow light like europeon motors ,Now these brake light switches also allow the indicators to work by shutting off the feed to the stop light so it flashes with indicators ,Why american cars use this system i dont know as its so complicated for the stop light switch function but try the ground or earth wire on the back lights and if no joy then ask a american mechanic with experiance of this sort of circuitry as when i get american cars for import i have to fit new back lights and disconnect the brake light switch .

No brake lights on 95 Suburban

Bad or borken wire harness in the steering coloum. check power to brake switch, should have power on one side, if not check the fuse if fuse is good and you have no power then your turn signal switch or harness is bad.

Brake lights do not work

This is a well documented problem, replace the turn signal/multifunction switch to correct this issue, this very problem happened on my GMC, it is a 99 as well, replaced the switch as instructed by a chevy forum member and it fixed the problem
