My daughter broke the Key off in her ignition, and after removing the parts around the ignition switch, I cannot figure out how the ignition switch can be removed to get the broken key out. Any help would be deeply appreciated.

If you go buy a new switch you may understand this better. but here goes the bolts that hold the switch to the colum are antitheft. the bolt head will brake off when you tighten them. you should have cone shaped round bolts holding the switch on. you will need a chisel and hammer to get the old ones out. good luck. hope this is helpful. you need to see the new bolts. that come with the new switch to fully understand.

If you remove the plastic covers from around your column you will see your ignition switch attached to the base of your lock cylinder housing. You will also find that your lock cylinder housing is attached to the column with tamper resistant bolts. You can remove your switch from the key housing and start the car with a flat head screw driver, but you will need to remove the housing from the column to dis engage the steering lock.

Ing swiych removal 2004 rio

2000 Kia Sportage ???????????????????? "rio"
NO a "RIO" not sportage, i got it.
this car>?
this is covered 100% in the FSM. (factory service manual) buy one.
or at , login ?
but is the same on all cars, with 1 twist.
1: disable air bags (FSM steps) or boom broken neck
disconnect main car battery minus lug.
2: move plastics , see screws there , under. ? bingo
3: see switch now.? sure.
4: remove the anti thief screws(have spares handy)
5: this takes off the clamp to the switch assy.
6: now the twist. (some cars steering wheel needs to be taken off.
others not.)
if yes, do not destroy the clock spring,,###$$$$$$$$$$$$$

if unsure, go to parts department online,
see all those parts, for free. look, now you know whats there.

i looked on line and saw
  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove the crash pad lower panel.
  3. Remove the ignition switch after loosening the screw with IG ON and disconnecting the 6P connector.
  4. Remove the steering column shaft.
  5. Remove the door warning switch after loosening the screws and disconnecting the 6P connector.
  6. Remove the key lock cylinder after pushing lock pin with key ACC.
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal procedure.

the book online fails to elaborate step 4, that is where an FSM shines
like the mighty SUN,.
if you want to work on your car, the best advice, buy the FSM.
it will pay for it self the first time you error, or get hurt.
i promise that. !

Not sure if there is one in the car. What it has is an EFI relay that controls power to the ECM and +12V supply to injectors, ignition coils, ignition amplifier and oxygen sensor heater. What really happened to your car?
