Question about 2004 Chevrolet Malibu

Strut Supports on a 2001

I have a 2001 Chevy Classic with only 50,000 miles on it. I am in need of new front strut supports but don't have the $700.00 the garage quoted me.
My husband is a novie mechanic. Is this something we can do in our garage? Any advie would be helpful.

    I need to clarify it's a 2004, not a 2001. We are also working on my husband's truck that is an 01. Sorry for any confusion.

    This is update. I am finally looking for the parts online and can't find what I need. Every website I have found only have rear strut supports. Not front.

    Does anyone have any idea's on a good website?

YOU CAN PULL THE STRUTS OFF OF CAR YOURSELF but will need a spring compressor to remove strut mounts. might wanna buy parts pull struts out and pay a shop to swap over for you this will save some labor

Replace front strut chevy venture

Its an easy job if you use a replacement strut assembly with the spring installed.These are best as you get a new top strut mount which includes a new top bearing ,a new spring and of coarse the new strut. 3 bolts at the top and a sway bar link to disconnect in the wheel well and 2 bolts at the strut/hub.If you do not buy an assembled strut DO NOT try to remove the spring without a GOOD spring compressor!!!!

99 grand caravan--hear a knocking in front suspension--recently replaced both sway bar links-still knocks--is it most likely lower ball joints? 170k miles--love the van, still goes great

The knocking could be ball joints, control arm bushings, worn strut mounts or struts, missing or damaged spring isolators or a broken coil spring. All of these things are easily diagnosed once the truck is up on a lift , with the exception of the strut, since it cannot be tested unless it is completely removed from the vehicle. However struts should be replaced every 50,000-75,000 miles.

Are struts on the front or back of this car?

The struts model (MacPherson Strut),are both in front and back of this car.

Of course this is only the cartridge, you have to transfer the spring, and the top mount of the existing strut. You need a pair of coil spring compressor to do the job. The basic procedure to replace a strut is:
Remove the top nuts that secure the strut assembly to the frame mount inside the engine compartment. Do not remove the center nut.
Mark the lower strut mounting location on the hub for installation reference. The alignment will be close if the new strut is installed in the same position.
Remove the bolts that hold the strut assembly to the hub.
Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
Mark the top mount for installation reference. Using a side mounted spring compressor, compress the spring and remove the top nut and retaining washer. Pull strut assembly out from the bottom of spring.
Slide the new strut assembly up into the spring and reposition the top mount onto the spring in the same position that it was removed. Install the retaining washer and top nut.
Tighten the top nut to the manufacturer's specifications and carefully remove the spring compressor.
Place the strut assembly back into the vehicle.

When is the recommended mileage to change the shocks/struts on my 2007 Honda Pilot?...currently about 45k miles...

HONDA Pilot struts do not require replace at specific mileage intervals or maintenance. Your vehicle’s struts should be checked annually. Struts wear out slowly and you may not notice gradual losses in ride comfort, handling and control. Excessive bouncing, rocking back and forth, drifting or nose- diving while braking, swaying, or cupping wear on the tires are some signs that your vehicle may have worn Struts. If you are purchasing new Struts for your HONDA Pilot consider premium Struts. Upgrading your struts usually improves overall ride quality, control and handling. Warn struts can increase the wear of tires, ball joints, steering linkage, springs and C.V. joints. Some original struts may be getting weak after 40,000 or 50,000 miles.

Failure symptoms: Vehicle continues to bounce after hitting bumps in roadway. Front suspension dives severely during hard braking. Swaying or rolling when at higher speeds. Signs of oil leaking from the shock rod seal. Clunking and banging noises coming from the strut may be signs of internal shock failure or strut mounts.

How do I replace the liftgate supports on a 2004 Tahoe?

Just support the lift gate with something so it does not fall down on you and remove the metal clips on the end of the support strut.Should have one on each end.They should come right off.The clips are spring tension.Just use a small flat blade screw driver.Sometimes you don`t have to remove them just pry them back enough to remove the strut.Then install the new ones.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Need to replace drivers side strut on 92 Toyota Previa,how much of lower dash to remove and how,got three screws by hood latch and int panel dimmer.Also took column collar off but still no access

The drivers side bolts can be accessed by pulling out the guage cluster and some of the ductwork. It's a tight fit but can be done. The passenger side on models without the airbag is accessed by going through the glove box. 
You can get to the top of the R Front shock tower bolts (14mm allen x 3) by removing the Airbag and glove box assemblies... there's barely enough room to get to those bolts. the deepest nut is going to be really hard to get out, but prevailed eventually. A time consuming project, but worth while.

As for the break lines: You don't have to take them apart if you try this trick.
First you need to remove the clips that hold the brake lines to the strut supports.

After the clips have been removed there should be enough play in the lines to shift the fittings out of the supports.

I use bolt cutters to make two cuts in the brake line supports about 1/4" apart. Remember to do the same to the new struts.

The brake line should just slide right out. When you put your new struts on the brake lines will slide in the slots you put in.

When you reasseble the brake lines to the supports the clip will hold the fitting tight even with the slot cut into the support.

Removing and installing trunk struts in chevy venture 2003

The trunk lift supports (struts) come fully extended. Install one end of the strut and then push up or open the trunk until the other end of the strut lines up with the ball stud and snap it on. If you cannot open the trunk far enough to line up the ball stud then you have gotten the wrong struts. Hope this helps.
