SOURCE: How to replace a headlamp on 2005 VW Beetle

I had this same problem, I used this blog link to replace the bulb in both of my headlights. I'll be honest here and tell you the passenger side is much easier than the drivers side. I'd recomend two of you be there for the first one, after that it's a one person job.

How to change 2000 vw beetle headlights put ion new one does not work

There are two spring clips located under the hood around each headlamp housing. Open both clips and extract the headlamp housing from the front of the car by pulling the plastic assembly by grabing the edges by the black rubber seal. The entire headlamp housing will pull out from the front bumper enough to allow you to change the bulbs. Repeat procedure and clip the spring clamps back in place.

How do you change out a burned out headlight for a 2002 Beetle?

There's a spring clip inside the hood compartment that holds the headlamp assemby in position. Release the spring clamp, grab around the edges of the headlamp where it meets the front fender and pull the headlamp assembly out of it's socket. Replace the bulb from the back of the headlamp assembly and reposition the headlamp assembly back into the socket. Once properly position replace tension of the spring clamps inside the hood.

Under the hood you on the back side of the headlight assembly there is a a small release lever with a lock. Push the lock in and rotate the release lever. Push the headlight assembly out so you can have access to the wiring plug. Disconnect the wiring plug and completely remove the headlight assembly. Now on the back of the headlight assembly is a spring clip and a small screw. Remove the small philips head screw and release the spring clip.

I need to change the headlight on a 1999 VW beetle, have no idea how, is my daughter's car and I am the Mom, so keep that in mind, not a mechanic here. Help me!

beetle's have very difficult headlamps to replace ..from inside engine compartment there is a "band" that goes around the headlight assembly that has to be released and they commonly break ..i would recomend not trying it yourself and taking it to a dealership so when and if it breaks a new band will be available or the car will not be able to remount the headlight assembly sorry

Yes, you need a very bright (and thin if possible) flashlight, a very small socket head (5mm?) on a long extension, a very long screwdriver and a little patience for this job. Four hands are better than two for this job but it can be done solo with the right tools and patience. In front of the battery cover is a small silver peg bolt and even a little white lock and unlock icon below it...you will need to rotate this peg about two good clicks to unlock (counter clockwise). If someone else holds the flashlight then you can look below this peg and get an idea of what is going on mechanically when you turn it.
Once the peg has unlocked the headlight assembly you need to look carefully for a lightweight aluminum lever that is easily pushed down with the long handled screwdriver behind the battery case alongside the headlight assembly. This lever when depressed will enable you to slide the entire headlight assemly out of the car. I suggest keeping a knee in front of the headlamp to prevent headlamp assmbly from falling. Once you have the H.L. assembly out then you can change the bulb. If you have gotten this far you will have no problem figuring out how to replace the bulb!
Reverse the above instructions to replace the HL Assembly and be sure to lock it in place (this is often the most difficult part) it definitely helps to have a second person at this stage to apply steady pressure to the headlight lense while locking back into place. Good luck!
