I have a 2003 Grand Marquis with a steering problem, When you turn hard to the right the steering seems to float on them shortly after straightening out makes a hard turn right without turning the ste

Immediately take the vehicle out of service until you can repair it! You may have a dangerously worn or cracked tie rod end or ball joint. Jack up the front end, put blocks or jack stands under the frame (but not the moveable parts of the suspension), and manually try to move the suspension parts. If you detect slop at the moveable connections, that's part of the problem. As part of this, rock the wheels back and forth to check for bad ball joints or control arm bushings.

Another possibility is a bad seal or check valve in the power steering actuator.

While driving steering wheel locked up

Sounds like your power steering fluid is low. Steering suddenly becomes very hard, then frees up. Did you perhaps hear a whining noise at the time?. Under the hood, find the power steering pump and / or top up bottle, and check the level. Usually a small dip stick is built into the screw top and marked. Use only correct fluid type.

It seems as though one of your front drive axle universals has failed and locked up. The other possibility would be a dry steering knuckle. Thank you, Dana
