This is a fairly straightforward mechanical procedure. If you will allow me to provide a little perspective first, just so we start on the same page.

Since you ask only for the procedure for replacement, I do not want to jump over the diagnostic element of this process. If you are holding a broken belt in your hand you can skip directly past this paragraph. The serpentine belt, referred to as the engine drivebelt does what fan belts did in the "old days". This belt is by the crankshaft and in turn spins the alternator, the water pump and the pump for the power steering and the air conditioner compressor. This belt is a wear item and should be examined once per year. The belt is smooth on one side and has ribs running long ways on the other side. Using a flashlight check for shiny areas, cracks of any kind or fluid on the belt. Any of these, change the belt.

Now we need to get our navigational landmarks in sync. The engine in most front-wheel drive vehicles is mounted transversely (sideways). So front and back of the engine become left (front of engine) and right (rear of engine). The drivebelt is on the front of the engine, so to your left as you raise the hood and peer inside.

There should be a drivebelt routing decal on the upper radiator panel (between the engine and the front of the car). I recommend at this point that you also take a few pictures of the drivebelt with your cell phone or digital camera. Detail its path around all accessory components. I know that this is belt and suspenders but it will help greatly with replacement. Now look for the belt tensioner under the power steering pump. The power steering pump is at 12:00 o'clock on the front of the engine. Read the sticker on the square power steering reservoir at the top front of the engine to ensure you are in the right place. The tensioner is the round pulley that looks like it it isn't attached to anything and therefore has no purpose. Put the appropriate wrench on the nut on the front of the tensioner and turn counterclockwise (push toward the back of the car). A long handled ratchet works best here since you will need to get some leverage to turn the tensioner. This will loosen tension on the belt. While holding the belt tensioner remove the belt from all of the pulleys and pull it out. When you release the belt tensioner, it will swing down out of the way. Now again rotate the belt tensioner and route the new belt onto the engine. This should do it. If you are going to be doing this intermediate level of repair and maintenance I recommend you get a hard-copy repair manual for your vehicle or subscribe to one of the many excellent repair on-line service.   1. Lift the car so you can work from underneath when needed.
  2. Disconnect the battery . Just to be safe.
  3. Take the serpentine belt off.
  4. Remove the alternator.
  5. Remove the A/C compressor. (You can do it without removing, but it's a royal PITA... LOL) Don't unhook the lines, just unbolt and move out of the way.
  6. Remove the worn tensioner from t he block. (You need to unbolt the pulley first to get to all the tensioner bolts)

You will only need to locate the fan belt diagram to replace it on correctly and a 1/2 breaker bar or ratchet to back off the tension er while replacing belts check the tension-er bearing if it feels ruff when you turn it replace it. Check water pump also to see if it turns smooth same with the alt.

Timing CHAIN tensioner you mean? Better have that noise checked ASAP. It may be a problem with the timing chain.

How to replace alternator belt


Find the belt tensioner bolt and loosen it. There will probably be two other bolts that need to be loosened (just loosened not removed). Move the alternator to its " most slack position" pull the old belt off anf fit the new one. Push the alternator with a broomstick or something similar to tension the belt. (Be sure to push against a solid part of the alternator or you could break it) tighten the tensioner bolt. the tension should be set so that you can push the belt in about 20mm between the pullies with your finger. If the new belt squeels when you start the car the belt is too loose. Tighten the other two mounting bolts.

Not sure but if doing belt yourself I will give you important tips. 1) before removeing T/Belt set engine to TDC nr 1 there should be marks on the crank and cam (s) gears that line up with a mark on the block / head. 2) prior to removeing tension to belt get liquid paper & mark cam gear(s) & crank gear to point on block / head. 3) mark T/Belt to cam(s), crank, balance shaft if fitted. 4) release tension & remove belt. 5) transcribe marks from old belt to new belt & make sure correct amount of teeth. 6) fit new belt so YOUR marks line up. 7) have tensioner suply presure to belt. 8) turn motor twice by hand to make sure pistons no hit valves 9) Make sure YOUR marks line up if YOUR marks line up it has to be right. 10) Very IMPORTANT if spring tensioner lossen locking bolt again to take up extra slack in belt. 11) tighten locking bolt. 12) put back together.

Start by drawing a diagram of the belt routing. Serpentine belts normaly have 1 spring loaded tensioner (1 pully will have a nut or 3/8 or 1/2 inch drive hole) That will be the tensioner. get spanner or ratchet to fit & lever the tensioner away from the belt. Remove belt. fit new belt to most pullys except the easiest to get to, lever the tenioner back & fit the belt to the last pully, Check the belt is on all pullys properly & your done

2003 Mitsubishi Galant Idler Belt Tensioner Replacement


I also need help knowing how to replace the belt tensioner pulley. It looks like you can't get out the bolt because the pulley is real close to the frame, unless the bolt has nuts on both ends, but it doesn't look like it.

DIY remove/replace serpintine belts on 1997 Buick Park Avenue with Supercharger.


There is no need to remove any bolts from the engine. It is usually easiest to raise the vehicle and remove the right front tire and the plastic splash shield to gain access to the lower engine pullies. It is a TIGHT FIT getting the belts in between the pullies and the fender. All I can say to that is "welcome to the wonderful world of auto repair! - NOW maybe you have a clue why we mechanics charge so much to do seemingly simple things like "just" replacing a little sepentine belt?"
Hopefully, the routing diagram below will help you to get the belts back on correctly.

You shouldn't need to loosen the tensioner itself. To release pressure on the belt tensioner, rotate the belt (or tensioner pulley if the belt is no longer installed) CLOCKWISE. This will release the tension to either remove the old belt or install a new one. Once installed, the belt tensioner will automatically take up the slack.

My altinater belt snapped, how do I replace it? Is this a dificult job to do on my own?


Not very difficult. Typically, it involves:

Loosening a locking nut on the tensioner for the belt. This allows the belt tensioner to be loosened to put a new belt on.

Finding the belt tensioner (some are automatic, spring loaded, others you loosen\tighten manually through a bolt) and loosening it so the belt fits loosely on the pulleys. If I were you, I would look at the pulleys without the belt and see if you can determine which is the tensioner.

Install new belt.

Tension it to spec. (Depends which vehicle you have.) If you have doubts, just tighten it so it doesn't flex more than an inch when pressed on the longest span.

Tighten locking nut.

Try running the car with the new belt. If you hear screeching, either loosen or tighten it until it goes away. Also make sure the electronics are all good, and that nothing is surging (as if losing power) since the alternator does charge your battery.

I need to replace the idler pulley/tensioner and the belt


When this idler wears out it makes a growling noise that changes with engine RPM. A Bad Idler Pulley May Wobble & Wear Out Your Serpentine Belt Prematurely. Get Rid Of That Horrible Noise & Change.

Remove the serpentine belt by using a breakover bar, ratcher or serpentine belt removal tool with the correct size socket for the pulley mounting bolt. Rotate tensioner arm to release tension. Remove the bel. Using the proper size socket, remove the tensiones mounting bolt and remove tensioner.

Before installing the new tensioner, make sure the mounting surface for the tensiones is clean and free rust or other obstructions. Find the locator pin hole and rotate the replacement tensiones until the locator pin and the hole line uo. Insert the pin into the hole. Reinstall the mounting bilt and torque down to tight fit.

Rotate the tensioner arm to install the serpentine belt. Make sure the belt is correctly fitted to all pulley in the drive system. Start the engine to check for any problems. Extreme care should be taken when reinstalling the serpentine belt because some of the pulleys are located in remote positions ans it is very hard to see that belt is seated properly in all of the grooves. If the belt isn't seated properly, the belt can "ride out" of the grooves and the belt can be damaged.

Also must review the ZJ Repair Manual Secc-7-Cooling-System for graphics references.

Remove water pump


Disconnect battery earth lead. Do not turn crankshaft or camshaft whn timing beld removed. Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine. Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated) Do not turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets. Observe all tightening torques. Remove engine, remve RH engine mounting. Remove auxiliary drive belts, water pump pulley, crankshaft pulley, timing belt upper cover, timing belt lower cover. Turn crankshaft clockwise to TDC on No. 1 cylinder, slacken tensioner bolts 5 & 6. Move tensioner away from belt and lightly tighten bolts. Remove timing belt. Remove water pump and replace with new one. Suggest to replace cambelt as well.
Installation
Ensure timing marks aligned3 & 4. Fit timing belt in anti-clockwise direction, standing at crankshaft sprocket. Ensure belt is taut between sprockets on non-tensioned side. Slacken tensioner bolt 5. slacken tensioner bolt 6. Allow tensioner to operate. Tighten tensioner bolt 6. Tighten tensioner bolt 5. Turn crankshaft on turn clockwise. Ensure crankshaft sprocket timing marks aligned 4.
Slacken tensioner bolt 5. Slacken tensioner bolt 6. Allow tensioner to operate. Tighten tensioner 6. Tighten torque: 20 - 26 Nm. Tighten tensioner bolt 5. tighten torque: 20 - 26 Nm. Apply thumb pressure to belt at middle. Approximately 5kg. Belt should deflect to 1/4 of tensioner bolt head width 7. Belt tention can also be set using burroghs (BT-33-73F) tension gauge 10 at middle. Turn crankshaft 90 ° anti clockwise. Check belt tension is 9.5 16,5kg (engine must be cold). Install components in reverse order of removal. Fit cranckshaft pully. Tighten crankshaft pully bolts 8. G4-J: Tightening torque: 12-15Nm.
G4-N/G4-k: Tightening torque: 10-12Nm
G4EA: Tighten crankshaft pully bolt 9. Tighten torque: 140-150Nm.
