SOURCE: need to know placement of heated oxygen sensor

The O2 sensors are located in the exhaust piping.
One (bank 1) is on the engine side of the Catalytic convertor.
Second (bank 2) is on the other side (exhaust end).

There are manufacturers that make universal fits that will go in either location. Be sure to specify the rear sensor when you go to the parts store.

It will look like this....

It threads right into the exhaust pipe.

SOURCE: I have a 03 Montero

Bank 2 usually refers to the passenger side of a v6 or v8 engine. Sensor 1 is usually the upper sensor. Theres one on the exhaust manifold near the top and one at the bottom near the muffler or catalytic converter. So if I had to guess it would be on the passenger side, coming out of the where the exhaust pipes come together from out of the engine. Sometimes it is under an aluminum heat shield that needs to be unbolted first. The sensor screws in like a spark plug and has an electrical clip at the end.

Bank 1 is on the side that cylinder number 1 is on, and 2 is on the other . Look up your firing order and you should find it fairly easily. And sensor 1&2 refers to before or behind catylitic converter.

The 2 O2 sensors in the exhaust manifolds are the numer 1 sensors. The one prior to the cat is the 2nd for bank 1 and after the cat 2nd for bank 2. Find the number 1 cylinder and that is the number 1 bank.
