Question about 2001 Dodge Durango

1 Answer

Poor fuel economy.

I removed the cat on the advise of the guy at the exhayst shop. He said mine was clogged and removing it would "open'er up" at allow the engine to run more freely. My mpg dropped to under 10 and my truck is running very rich now. Do I need to put it make on or could an o2 sensor be bad?

What you have done is alter the back pressure which will cause it to use more fuel contrary to popular belief a road vehicle engine is designed to work with a certain amout of back pressure and you taking the cat off has altered this ,so refit the cat and make sure the sensors are connected then test them with a multimeter ,what you do is with the sensor disconnected and their will be two of them one befroe the cat and one after but with the plug out check the two wires the same colour to the sensor for a continuety ,no continuety renew ,then the same two wires on the feed end of the plug check for 12v with the engine running if ok reconnect and across the other two wires you should read .08? something and engine is revved it should drop to 0.5? area if no reading then renew the sensor .To run a engine in certain countries is a offence now i know this is annoying when the middle east like bahrain and saudi do not specify new vehicles to have a cat is a whatever you want to call it but in europe and america you commiting an offence

Poor fuel economy, mileage

What should I do if my fuel economy is excessively low on my vehicle?

If your fuel economy is excessively low on your vehicle, it may need to be serviced or repaired. You may want to contact your local dealer or a reputable repair facility to check your vehicle. The following are some of the diagnostic checks a mechanic will typically conduct for poor mpg on your Honda Prelude:

Perform "On-Board Diagnostic System Check" for diagnostic trouble codes (sensors or actuators which may be malfunctioning)
Check for dragging brakes
Check transmission shift patterns for slipping, use of all gears, lock-up operation
Check ignition timing
Check owner's driving habits including A/C usage, hard accelerations, carrying heavy loads
Check emission control system
Check vacuum hoses for leaks, kinks, proper routing
Check tire pressure
Check fuel type, quality, and alcohol content
Check fuel pressure and fuel system for leaks
Check air cleaner element
Check coolant level
Check ignition system for wet plugs, cracks, wear, improper gap, burned electrodes, or heavy deposits, cracking or improperly connected ignition wires
Check for proper calibration of speedometer
In extreme cases, there may be engine problems such as poor compression or faulty fuel injectors. Replacing fuel injectors on any vehicle is not for the beginner or backyard tech. It is advisable to take it to the Dealership or a repair shop that you trust.

What does antipollution faulty mean? its just shown up on my dashboard. is it a serious problem

Hi Michelle, I'm not too sure what vehicle you are driving but from experience with a 2006 Peugeot 307 that I owned and a couple of Citroens that were brought into my Repair Shop, when you get the antipollution faulty error it suggests that there is a problem with your cars emmision system and that either one of your oxygen sensors need replacing(either the pre-cat converter one or post-cat converter sesnsor) or the catalytic converter itself. But from experience replacing any of these is quit costly a what I found works great is removing the baffle in that catalytic converter. This entails removing that section of the exhaust system by removing the bolts or by cutting it off with a grinder. The cat box I usually usually first box box exhaust system and you will see one sensor before the box and one after on the exhaust pipe. Be careful not to remove or damage or remove these sensors. Also you want want keep the exact same box so cut it off and cut open in a manner whereby you can have it welded back together after removing the insides of this box. It becomes faulty usually dispatched to poor quality fuels a gets clogged. Every time I have done this the fault went away a I also noted an increase I vehicle power and also that the car became lighter on fuel consumption.

Replace or remove the cat

So what is the question? It would appear that you have a catalytic converter issue going on. Replacement is the proper thing to do; removal is illegal in most jurisdictions. Besides, unless you want a constant Check Engine light lit, along with the possibility of very poor fuel economy, replacing the cat is the best option. Without it, the O2 sensors will not operate correctly and the PCM will default to a preset fuel usage that will decrease your fuel mileage by 20 to 35 percent.

Fuel consumption high on my 2.0 caliber.likely problems

Check for fault codes --- blocked cat converter---- low pressure in tyres.---blocked air filter. low fuel manifold pressure--- auto not shifting to overdrive---- ambient air temp sensor faulty---are just some reasons for poor economy

I have no power taking off at stop lights when i use my ac and it seems to be using triple the gas(a quarter of a tank for 18 miles total) what are causing these?

Wow, that's a lot of gas. If your check engine light is on it needs to be scanned to determine the codes. I would check the catalytic converters to see if they are clogged up. A clogged cat will rob your power and cause poor economy.

Extreme hard start when warm. Keeps coming up

Have the cat checked, sounds like a restriction in the exhaust,or the return line to the tank is restricted, remove the fuel cap,and blow air back to the tank with compressed air, threw the return line, where the pressure regulator bypasses the fuel back to the fuel tank.

My truck was traveling at 70 mph, I gave it more fuel and it bucked and backfired hard enough to feel in cab. Just got new wires, plugs, cap and rotor. Once I let off it continued fine and even ran well...

definately clogged fuel filter or poor fuel pressure. Remove the filter and blow through it-if you have veins stick out of your forehead it is clogged. Go run it hard and then park it and observe the catalytic converter. If it is glowing red, then you have a clogged cat.

To much oil was put in truck and now were told

To diagnos the catalytic converter, remove exhaust Y pipe from exhaust manifolds and start up. If engine runs goood and revs up, then suspect a restriction in your exhaust. Exhaust shop should be able to fix the problem. Cannot repair the cat converter. It is a honeycomb of metals inside that superheat the exhaust and burn off any unburnt fuel. When the honeycomb melts from contamination then it blocks exhaust air flow.
