DOES IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE WHICH DIRECTION THE WEDGE GOES ON THE THERMOSTAT. THERE IS A SLOT FACING THE RADIATOR AND ONE FACING BACK. DID NOT PAY ATTENTION WHEN I PULLED OUT THE OLD THERMOSTAT BUT IT CAN...

The thermostat is designed to go in one way. The wedge faces toward the radiator so that it opens toward the engine. Remember to use the right coolant for the vehicle you a working on. On yours its orange in color and branded Dex-Cool

I need to know where the thermostat is located for the Audi A8 V8 4.2 Quattro Automatic 2006

The thermostat is located in front of the engine, between V cylinder banks, for Audi A8 V8 4.2 Quattro Automatic. See pictures below:

Remove the thermostat housing (2 bolts) and the old thermostat. Note the orientation of the old thermostat (vent valve facing UP). Clean both thermostat housing and block surfaces and remove all traces of old gasket material. Install the new thermostat vent valve facing UP.

Please do rate my response. Thanks!

Which way does the spring on the thermostat face when replacing the thermostat in

The spring end of the thermostat should always go towards the engine, and it should not be towards the hose.

Where is the thermostat located?

These are the steps to remove it if that is what you are planning to do:

Removal & Installation
  1. With the engine cold, drain the cooling system.
  2. Disconnect the radiator hose from the thermostat housing outlet.
  3. Remove the thermostat housing outlet and remove the thermostat.
  4. Using a putty knife, clean the gasket mounting surfaces.

  1. If the thermostat is equipped with a pin valve, be sure to install the thermostat with the pin facing upward.
    To install:
    1. Install a new thermostat the gasket, O-ring or sealant (as applicable). Always install the spring end of the thermostat facing the engine.
    2. Tighten the thermostat cover-to-thermostat housing bolts to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm).
    3. Connect the radiator hose to the thermostat housing.
    4. Fill, then bleed the cooling system. Check for leaks.

Thermostat in backwards?

The bulky end of the thermostat should be facing away from the radiator so that it is placed in the engine such as to sense the temperature of the water in the engine and not the radiator hose.
