The transmission in this truck is computer controlled so what must be done 1st is to have the control module scanned for fault codes so you can make sense of what area needs to be diagnosed and repaired to cure the problem. Right now you are locked in failure mode strategy or limp as some call it.

SOURCE: land rover discovery 1994 gear selection

Hi there!

I'm a Land Rover owner myself - old school Series models.

This sounds like major gearbox trouble.

As the selector shafts are different for gears #2 and #4, I may be inclined to think there is an external problem around the base of the gearlever.

Probably cheaper to have a look here first.

If you've been offroading, it's possible you've managed to get a stone in there.

With the covers off the transmission, if there is no fault externally that you can see, then the gearbox may have to be stripped to find the obstruction.

You can always join one of the Landrover forums to assist on this and other matters.

Hope this helps you. If it does, please rate as Fixya! Thanks.

SOURCE: land rover clutch. can't get into gear

it's an odd occurance but it sounds like the hydraulic fluid in the clutch lined may have boiled. it's usually okay once it's cooled down, but if the pedal feels weird you may want to bleed your line.

My 2000 land rover discovery 2 sd model will not engage into 4 wheel drive and the engaging handle has no pressure at all?

Your DII is (always) in 4 wheel drive. There is NO 2x wheel drive option on a DII, it's always in 4x4 high, or low. To select 4-wheel drive low, put your transmission in neutral and pull down the high low gear selector.

Car will not drive forward

As it says, the body computer finds a problem with the gearbox. Could be an electrical problem or mechanical problem in the transmission.
A tech would scan the body computer for trouble codes to know where to start looking. This may require a dealer scanner.

This is a front wheel drive car with a long linkage between the gear stick and the gear box. The linkage is probably worn and needs adjustment.

get the computer failure codes, also may be one or more of your transmission shift solenoid sensors. any one of transmission sensors could cause this. they are a lot less expensive. re-post with failure codes
