Check the fuel pressure. A slight dip in pressure will keep the engine from starting. When is the last time you did a tune up? Even if you are getting some spark you might not have enough. New plugs, wires, distr. cap could solve this problem. Or try a new fuel filter. When diagnosing a car problem always do simple cheap things first, as this usually ends up being the cause.

SOURCE: 97 Toyota Caldina starting problem

you could have a bad cylanod in your starter that's what is sounds like or you might need a new starter sence you have looked and tested everything else that's the only other peice of resenable equitment left and if thats not it you could try the O2 sencer in the car if that's bad or going out it will make a car act that way. if that's not it then your problem, lys in the corb. but i would try the cylanoid in the starter first and work your way up from there

My Toyota Vigo Hilux develop smoking then was leaking oil then someone tried to fix and now cannot start at all.

all that , scares me, sounds like car is falling apart,
why not get it serviced? golly gee?
no year stated, fail 1
no engine stated, (gas or diesel or displacement size)
smoking at tail pipe end or just where.? and hot and cold engine?
or just smokes on hills,
NO start, well, does it crank, no car with A./T starts unless cranked,
automatic trans, is it? (a key fact that)
  1. if it cranks and the engine is gas, then spark is 2nd.
  2. got spark to all cylinders, ?
  3. if spark is good, and timed correct, next is test fuel
  4. does test fuel start engine? y/n
  5. yes, the fueling is bad,
  6. no? then engine is bad or spark was bad.
  7. tell more get more..... its not hard, each step , every test is by ORDER, not guessing.

2001 toyota tundra wont turn over and smelling gas

flooding (check fuses , always)
has 50 causes.
ever do the service on this engine?
which engine?
3.4 L 5VZ-FE V6
190 horsepower (2000-2004)
4.7 L 2UZ-FE V8
245 horsepower (2000-2004)

if the engine is not bad, (bad compression, do to skipping service)
its lost park or is excessive fuel injection
ir sure park is good (simple test)
we use the opr, guide way called unflood mode.
you crank with throttle at WOT, wide open throttle , this act cuts all fuel
and she starts.
if not , its got bad spark or bad engine.

there are just 3 tests
1: compression good.
2: spark good to all cyl.
3: fueling checks.
sometimes its lack of air , (fails #3) and that is because the cold start air supply is DEAD> causing rich starts.
so start car with 10% throttle, creating a virtual start up air supply.

its one of those 3, we use a set of $60 guages to find it.

Hi i have a 1990 1.3 s toyota starlet i have replaced this rotoa arm dist cap all leads have recharged the battery the problem is she will turn over but will not fire in to lfe please help me

Hello, Keith, I'll try to help. The engine needs gas, air, spark, and compression to run, so those are what you need to concentrate on. If it was running good previously, but now won't start, usually it is a gas or spark (ignition) problem. I'm not familiar with the Starlet, but assume a '90 model would be fuel injected. If it is throttle body injection, you can observe the fuel spray out the bottom of injectors when the engine is cranking over. You should see a fine mist cone pattern of fuel spray hitting the throttle plates. From there it will mix with the air in the intake manifold and be fed into the cylinders. If gas is not coming out when cranking the engine, check the fuel pump and/or the fuel filter for a problem. Toyotas often had the electric pump in the fuel line close to the gas tank. If the engine is multi port injection, likely the pump will be in the gas tank. You cannot observe the injector spray on multi port, but you can determine if the injectors are pulsing, and if they are, you can be certain that gas is getting into the cylinders-that is, if the fuel pressure at the injectors is high enough where it should be. You can also pull the spark plugs after cranking it over a bit, and check that the plugs smell of gas, and may be wet with gas.
Have you checked for spark? If you suspect an ignition problem, have a helper crank the engine over while you check one of the spark plug wires for a blue snapping spark. Use a spark tester, or just push the plug wire boot back from the end and hold the metal end terminal 1/4 inch from an engine bolt or bracket- some grounding source like that. Be careful not to get shocked-hold it close to metal. Another way is to take a spark plug and attach it to the plug wire, and lay the spark plug on a metal piece of the engine-so the hex of plug or the threads are grounded to the metal. Now you don't have to hold it. Just have your helper crank the engine over while you watch for that blue snapping spark. If spark is orange or intermittent or not even sparking, then you have an ignition problem. The ignition coil or the igniter may be the problem. The igniter is what Toyota calls the ignition control module-the part that cuts the primary circuit to the coil so high current (spark) will travel to the spark plug.
Well, there is a rundown of gas and spark. If you have both, and the air filter is clean so the intake gets plenty of air, one could next check engine compression-do or have done a compression test of the engine. You didn't mention the spark plugs in your list of new parts. Are they still good, and is the gap correct on them? Post back if you need more help, or have questions. Good luck.

My 2001 toyota tundra is backfiring through the motor. I recently had some freezing problems, and now i cant get it to start and backefires through motor.

car and it spins over but fails to start, there are three fundamental systems that must work properly and should be checked. The fuel and air management is one. Too much or too little of either one of these and the engine will not start. Second is the ignition system. Not only is a spark required to ignite the fuel, it must be delivered on time and in the right place. Last is the engine integrity. It must compress the fuel and air, contain the explosion upon ignition and convert heat energy to mechanical energy to propel the vehicle. A breakdown in any of the three will prevent the engine from starting.
  • Crank the car. Listen to the engine. An experienced driver should depend on his ears and know the sound of the engine. If as it cranks the sounds are abnormal, this is a strong indication of a mechanical failure. Each cylinder, when strong and working well, compresses the fuel and air in proper sequence. When this fails due to a timing belt or head gasket problem, everything sounds different. If the engine sounds entirely different while cranking, mechanical repairs are necessary.
  • 2 Install a fuel pressure gauge. If the engine sounds as it normally does install the gauge, turn the key on and watch the pressure indicator. It should read as high as 50 psi. Refer to the manufacturer's service manual for specifications and fuel pressure test procedures. Some have fuel pressure specs as low as 35 psi. If there is no reading, the fuel pump is in doubt. Turn the key off, and the on again, and listen for a brief, faint hum in the fuel tank. The pump is designed to run, then shut off if the vehicle does not start. If there is no fuel pressure and no hum, the fuel pump or pump circuit has malfunctioned. Make sure there is fuel in the tank.
  • 3 Test the ignition system. Remove a conveniently located spark plug wire from a spark plug and install a spark tester. This is a spark plug with an alligator-clip attached. Clip the tester to the engine. This completes the circuit so the spark can jump across the plug electrode. Make sure the clip is attached to bare metal for a good ground. Have an assistant crank the vehicle and watch for a bright spark. If there is none, the ignition system must be repaired.

Cylinder head torque 1n diesel engine

    Hi!

The Toyota Starlet is a fuel efficient compact car that replaced Toyota's Publica model in 1973 and was manufactured through the 1999 model year. The Starlet was sold new in the United States for only four years, from 1981 through the 1984 model year. Originally a rear-wheel drive car, the Starlet transitioned to front-wheel drive in 1984.

The 1981 to 1984 versions of the Starlet that were sold in the U.S. were powered by a 1.3 liter OHV engine with four cylinders and electronic fuel injection. The engine has a 2.95-inch bore and 2.87-inch stroke and produces 58 horsepower at 4,200 rpm. The 1981 and 1982 versions of the engine produced 67 ft-lbs of torque, and the 1983 and 1984 versions produced 74 ft-lbs of torque. The compression ratio is 9.5:1.
    Hope that helps!!

95 toyota tercle will not start

    1. check the battery if its charged or not by blowing the horn.
    2. if the battery is ok try crank the engine if it doesnt crank then you have a starter problem.
    3. after you crank the engine check if you have enough fuel on your tank.
    4. if it wont start check the ignition system for electrical supply on your spark plugs and if everything fails you got to let a mechanic check your car.

Have you just started to have this problem recently? could be just some bad fuel. If not than I would lean towards checking or replacing your spark plugs & check spark plug wires for cracks. It could also be your catalytic converter is starting to plug up on you ? Check listed problems first before attempting anything else.
