Probably just a Light to be honest, in 68 you are lucky to get that. probably just a single black or yellow wire running under the dash, to the thermostat and sensor

Ford has lots of problems with the sender reliability. Typically, the sender (and expensive fuel pump) replacement resolves the issue. To test, you need to take the connection off of the sending unit, at the tank, turn on ignition, and then ground and un ground it and view results at the gauge. If the gauge responds, the sender needs to be replaced.
There are aftermarket senders that cost less than OEM.

mcdevito75 here, It could be the gauges, specially if the y stay at the top, if these are the only 2 gauges that act this way it could be the oil and coolant temp. sensors on the engine itself. Have your repair shop check these out.

SOURCE: temperature gauge was reading at
This sounds to me like your coolant temperature sensor/ sender is going bad allowing for your gauge to go all over the place. Also on these 87 - about 91 or so they had issues with the wiring shorting out. Basically the wires had no protection on them they would rub against the metal allowing for failure.
