Have you checked for fuel pressure?

  • donna Feb 15, 2012

And how do you check fuel pressure? I'm new to all this.

you would measure fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge. There will be two fuel lines on the passenger side of the vehicle. The larger line is the pressure line. A fuel gauge would be installed on this line and fuel pressure would be measure.

    what engine do you have?

If there is no squirt of gas down the bore as you look at it and open throttle- no need for cranking, you are just checking for fuel inthe bowl. If none there replace fuel filter first and check, if nothing; then replace fuel pump

I hoped and prayed it is only the fuel filter!

I hate to tell you this but both engines in a 1990 dynasty are fuel injected. There will be no squirt of gas when you open the throttle. Also in over 15 years I have never had a fuel filter cause a vehicle not to start! You may have jumped the gun rating Johns solution......

The fact no gasoline is smelled with an engine that will not start is still good evidence the engine is not getting fuel. If there was a no spark condition with that a Bosch fuel injection system there would be some wetness in the bore and a smell of gas would be present.

Yes, if it is fuel injected one should install a noid light, but a 12 volt test light will do to check to make sure the injector is getting a signal from the engine computer if it is US Dynasty with original engine. It would be attached across the 2 wire connector that sits over the center of the bore. The light should flicker as engine is trying to start.

I forgot to add as long as lamp flickers, indicating working injector, suspect fuel pump.

If you do not have a fuel pressure gauge- crack open the larger steel line connecting to the throttle body and just turn the ignition key to start position only for a second- if the fuel pump is functional you will have a spray of gasoline, so just crack the line open enough to just slightly move the line. It is an unsophisticated method and has some safety risk, but it is a shortcut way to check for fuel pressure without a gauge. In my honest opinion, in this case- it should be safe as the fuel pump is likely the problem. Just remember to tighten the line back up right away.

If you are in a cold area, the fuel filter is sometimes a collecting point for water. I have seen a couple occasions since 1970 where the filter froze blocking the line. Rare- but it can happen. Gas line freeze up is also a possiblity. Even with ethanol doped gaslonie. Vehicle has to be kept above freezing for a day to thaw it out adequately in most cases.

While your changing the fuel filter and have a drain pain under the the filter to catch the gas turn the key on and see if fuel comes out of the hose. If it does than there is an injection issue and we will need to check some sensors, wiring and fuses. If this is a 2.2 liter it is not uncommon for the injector(s) to go bad on the four cylinders.

If there is no fuel coming out of the lines than you need to check for power to the pump and/or listen to see if you can hear the pump running. If there is power and the ground is good than the pump has failed. If there is no power than we will again need to check some fuses, wiring, and relays/switches.

What engine do you have?

have you tried starting the vehicle with carb spray?

After hot engine wont start and smells like gas

Most likely causes are bad engine coolant temp sensor OR leaking fuel injectors. Bad engine coolant temp sensor will give computer false reading and computer provides wrong air fuel mixture. Leaking fuel injectors will load the engine with raw gas--just like flooding it. Try pushing the gas pedal to the floor and holding it there when cranking when hot. That forces the computer into "clear flood" mode and it shuts off the injectors. If it starts up with pedal down, that would be a sign of leaking injectors.

Is gas petal on ford explorer is almost on the floor, also it cranks but wont start

it may be your fuel pump, take off your air cleaner and pump the gas with the engine off and see if you smell or see gas, then try it with someone turning the engine over and see if u can smell or see gas, if not your pump is probably shot

When I start my car in the morning and start it up Im smelling gas and I smelled it later after work

Well I can't find the leak from here but you must have one. Park your car in a clean spot and look for wet spots on the ground to determine where to start looking. I don't advise driving as you could catch the car on fire. Check around the fuel filter, and the fuel line on the engine for wet spots and gas smells.

My 1996 Mitsubishi Mirage LS 2-door coupe. 1.2l Stick shift Standard hesitates in all gears. If i press the gas to much it starts to smell like something is burning. My transmission works cause i can...

Your clutch is slipping. If you hold your brakes, can you release the clutch without the engine killing? Do you smell the burning at this time? Then you need to replace your clutch. Do it soon before it damages the flywheel.
