SOURCE: need help wit belt 1194 940 volvo!

It is possible you are looking at the page for the 1994 960 and not the 940. The 960 had one (serpentine) belt. Your 940 has three. Hopefully chiltons has the repair order for the 940s as well.

I know it's not alot, but I hope it helps

SOURCE: volvo 940 Ignition lights don't come on when car

Alternator brushes could be the issue.
*some dirt on them or wrongly located brushes,
*lenght of brushes are out of limit
also,
*bad electrical connection from alternator to the car body
*(low possibility but still..) dislocated alternator armature, bad bearings (can make kind of sounds)

Due to the alternator problem its weakend the battery and eats it up finally, immediate fix adviced.

Is your alternator actually charging? If you are not getting power into your alternator it will not put power out.

You need a new regulator, or you have a bad ground to your battery.

What causes the battery and alternator to lose power?

It sounds more like your alternator is bad. The basics boil down to this: Your battery when fully charged is used to start your car and support your electrical needs as driving (lights, power windows, etc..) After starting your car the battery loses a little of it's charge and the alternator recharges battery as well as providing power for your ignition, electrical accessories. If the alternator goes bad or is weak, then you rely on more battery power which in-turn drags battery down until it no longer can start your car.
With this said, you can have any good parts store test both your starter and alternator and MOST will do it for free.

Battery test good. alternator test good. But

YOU COULD HAVE BAD POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE OR LOOSE OR DAMAGED FIELD WIRE GOING TO ALTERNATOR.

Battery is losing power overnight. fitted new

Here's my take on this.. if it were an un-modified Ford I would first suspect the Diode Module inside the Alternator is leaking power to ground. This can be easily tested by disconnecting the Alternator to see if the problem persists. A load test is best here too, read on.

Alternatively (no pun indended) the Alternator can be bench tested for this specific problem.

Since this vehicle was electricaly modified.. I would imagine the additional circuitry would be fused.. this would aide in testing. You would have to connect a load meter between the battery and the vehicle, disabling systems one by one (pulling fuses) while watching the draw.

You didn't mention it.. I assume you disconnect a battery cable while your away to preserve your good battery while your dealing with this problem.. and that's working for you as a work-around till you get this fixed.

Headlamp not working and engine loses power

sound like alternator is not charging battery.hook a digital voltmeter to battery.crank engine up.battery voltage should be 13.5 volts to 14.5 volts.with engine running.if not alternator not charging.i warn people head of time.turn off radio before disconnecting negative battery cable.so you wont loose radio playing code.do this if you are going to remove alternator your self.besure let the auto parts place check the alternator first to make it is faulty.if alternator good you have blown fuse or link and the alternator electrical connectors could be damaged.
