Car will not start

My '92 buick roadmaster wont start. I replaced the starter and the solenoid, checked all the cables running to and from the starter, checked the battery. After putting in the new starter I realized that the starter wasn't engaging with the fly wheel at all. Please help

    I started my car up and turned the wipers on. The wipers wouldn't turn off so I turned the car off. Went to start it back up and the car wouldn't turn over. Has new starter and solenoid. Battery is good and so are the fuses. What else can I check?

    Had car running with the wipers on. Wipers wouldn't shut off so I turned the car off. A few minutes later I tried to start my car and it wouldn't turn over. Replaced the starter and solenoid and it still won't do anything. What else can I check? Battery and fuses are good.

Recheck the battery, the starter doesn't care if your battery gives 12 volts, it needs CCA (Cold Cranking Amps),  Autozone will test this for free where I live, most likely where you live too.

Where is the fusible link?

There is a black wire that goes from the battery + terminal to the battery junction block (not the one that goes to the starter solenoid). A red wire runs from the BJB to FUSIBLE LINK A (14 GA-RUST).

There is a PPL (purple?) wire that runs from terminal A of the ignition switch to the S terminal of the starter solenoid. If you turn the ignition switch to START, the starter should, well, start. If not, the solenoid is ng.

Clicking sound when turning the ignition 1992 buick roadmaster

Just going by what you described it sounds like battery or starter. I bet the car starts when it is jumped off. Take it somewhere to have the battery checked (Auto Zone, etc where they will check it for free.) If its not the battery then take it somewhere to get the starter and solenoid checked. Either solution shouldn't be extremely expensive.

My roadmaster just clicks and wont start

Check all your battery cable ends to be sure they are tight and free of any corrosion. If that doesn't help the battery may be discharged or you could have a faulty selenoid on the starter. Start by having someone use jumper cables connected correctly and if it starts then you may just need to charge/replace the battery.

Where is the started located on the 1993 buick roadmaster? The car will not start?

from the driver seat , it is on right side of engine, at bottom, in front of the trans bell housing. If it clicks fast when you turn the key, tap on the solenoid and the starter. If it has single click , probably starter problem or solenoid, replace both.

Starter install 1992 buick roadmaster how to remove

Do you mean the starter-motor removal?
Disconnect the battery. Disconnect the red/positive battery cable from the starter. Trace the red/positive cable to where it ends (that's the starter), disconnect it from the solenoid. Use applicable socket wrench/flat-wrench to unbolt/remove the starter-motor. Installation is reverse of removal.

My car wont start

Hi,

Check the starting solenoid (most likely) and/or the starter (likely).

The starter system is initiated at the ignition switch when the key is turned to start. At this point, the ignition switch then provides +12VDC to the staring solenoid. The starting solenoid then performs two (2) functions. It provides the switching action (hundreds amps) from the battery heavy cable to the actual starter motor. The solenoid likewise pushes a small pinion gear along the shaft of the starter motor to engage the ring gear. The ring gear is of course on the edge of the flywheel which in turn is attached to the crankshaft.

Starter system problems could be corrected by:
1. check battery, battery cables and connections;
2. charge the battery if required;
3. clean brushes and guides of brush holders of the starter motor;
4. clean the commutator and commutator segments;
5. check/replace the armature or field coils if determined to be defective;
6. in some extreme cases it could be the drive pinion or the flywheel gear ring is defective.
7. often it is the big switch that the solenoid activates that looses contacts causing no +12V internally to the motor.
8. It could possibly be a defective the IGN switch itself. Relative to this, you might try and check the connectors/terminals and electrical joints.

In the picture below, the upper portion is the starter solenoid while the one below it is the actual starter.

Given the amount of work to overhaul a starter, you might consider just replacing it. On the otherhand, a solenoid is repairable except when burned.

This of course assuming that all other vital components of the car are working.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
