SOURCE: Rear main seal helpmes

if its that bad your only option is to pull the tranny and replace the seal also check the condition of the end of the crankshaft where the seal rides for excessive gouging or the new seal my not seal without first repairing or replacing the crank, this is rare however and a new seal should do the trick. i recomend shopping around as the seal only costs about $25 and the major cost is removing the engine or transmission to replace it (wich ever is easier sometimes the motor is, but anyway maybe you can find a local friend or family member who could R&R the transmission or motor for you at a good price id say around 500-800 would be more than fair, look around you would be suprised when a shop is slow what kind of deals they will give out just to get some work , good luck please rate Ps those additive are not going to work as the seal has failed very badly and has nothing to hold back any thickness oil, the additives are only hurting your motor -jeff

SOURCE: removel of altanator on 2001 nissan pathfinder

Disconnect the battery - both positive and negative terminals and remove battery from holder (better access that way). From underneath - remove the plastic shield underneath the front of the car. It is held on by a few bolts. Remove the upper radiator hose (some coolant will drain out). Also free the cable from the support bracket on the top of the platic fan housing. There is an overflow hose that is also clipped to the fan housing unlcip the hose and move it out of the way. From underneath, push in on the clips and the lower half of the fan housing will come out of the bottom. From the top - remove the two bolts holding the upper part of the fan housing and you should be able to work it out from the top. You should now have better visibility and access to the alternator. Loosen the belt tensioner (from below) and remove the belt. There are two mounting bolts on the alternator, a long one through the alternator and a second on the "dog ear" of the alternator. Once the alternator is free - you can get at the battery cable post and the other wires. The wiring harness can be removed by pressing in on the locking clip. Most difficult is the wiring harness support bracket. A short 10mm wrench can get to it. The alternator is now free but will have to be manipulated forward so that it sits below the fan. Once there - you can reach down from the top, and pull the alternator into the larger gap between the fan blades. While rotating the fan, bring the alternator around with it to the top and it will come out. To reinstall -- do everything in reverse. I recommend replacing the belt so you don;t have to do this again.

SOURCE: Rear engine oil leak....

Oil leak can be attributed to several factors.
1. Gasket failure.
2. Uncontrolled Crank case pressure Failure.

RECOMENDATION:
Tighten both the valve cover and oil pan bolts.
Replace the Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve and vacuum line.,

INFO: PCV
This is a valve causes a negative vacuum on the engine while its running, As to say if it had a leak in a valve cover it should not be leaking while its running, only when the engine it turned off.

Hope this tip guides you in the correct direction to solve this problem.

Leaking valve cover on 1998 pathfinder

The valve cover gaskets can be a large job on this vehicle and could cost you $450-490 depending on the labor rate in your area. I would quote 5.5 hours; the rear main seal could be about the same, maybe $100 more in labor time.

I would expect an engine with this mileage to leak some oil... not drip, but seep oil on the hot engine and produce a smell or smoke. Make sure the PCV system is working correctly, use thicker weight engine oil like 50 weight Castrol and use an over the counter oil additive like Engine Restore, which you can buy at your local auto parts store.

Hope this helps (remember to rating this answer and leave some testimonial comment).

My 92 pathfinder needs clutch replaced. Estimate is $800 at local mechanic. He figures $300 for parts and turn flywheel. 8 hours labor @ $500. Says must remove some suspension and exhaust to access. Seems...

He is right. It does take 6-8 hours but it never hurts to get a second opinion. The labor looks about right but the parts seem a little high, not by much though.

Leaky valve cover valve on passenger side on 1996 Nissan Pathfind

no such thing as a valve cover valve. you have a leakey valve cover and you replace the gasket, if you do one do both they come in a kit. also to do that job you have to do the intake gasket and plenum gasket as well. about $150.00 in parts maybe 5 hours labor

Oil leak in rear main area and I have already replaced it

Have you replaced the rear main seal? What bout the housing that holds the seal, it'a an alu casing and it might hava a crack? The crankshat rear part where the seal goes could have a deep groove as well.

Not all coolers look like radiators. I wouldn't think it should cost that much. Try somewhere else.
