The check gas cap light was in response to complaints of the check engine light being on for loose/missing gas caps. So now when the PCM sees a large EVAP leak the first thing it does is illuminate the check gas cap light (on models equipped with the light). Since it doesn't know if the gas cap is on or not it can have other issues like a vent solenoid stuck open which the PCM would be unable to distinguish between that and the gas cap left off.
There will still be a trouble code in the PCM for the EVAP system.

Check engine light comes on when the computer detects a malfunction in the emision control system, could be a loose or broken vacumm line, loose gas cap or a sensor.
Drive your vehicle to an AutoZone store, ask them to retreive the trouble codes from your computer memory, they will do that and a print out of the codes and their meaning. This a free service they provide for their customers.
Don't forget to rate this answer. Good Luck

Testimonial: "Thanks for quick and pin point reply that will save me money. I already had replaced gas cap from a previous episode."
SOURCE: Check engine light stays on
You need to have your engine fault codes read to know what to look for. That is why it is on. Go to almost any auto parts store like Schuck's/Kragan/Chief's Pep Boys/Auto Parts Plus/Auto Zone. They have a tool you can use or they will do it for you, FOR FREE.
This will let you know why you have the check engine light on.

SOURCE: ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. CODE
Lets start with how knowledgeable you are
You have an EVAP System issue, maybe
You asked if the gas cap is specific
You know that it is to some extent
Application Specific -but the parts store
would give you the correct one
Was the first code even related to a gas cap?
When you say I was told, you mean what?
A professional mechanic you asked a question,
took a guess to give you an answer?
Do you know how to test the solenoid your
referring to? If not take it to a repair shop &
let them Smoke Test it & actuate all the system
components with a scan tool.
