Rattling noise coming from underneath 2000 bmw 323i

I have had the car in several times at various shops trying to figure out what the annoying rattling noise is. It occurs when driving over pothole or pulling off road...i.e. turning into a driveway. On smooth roadway no noise. The front and rear end suspension has been changed from shocks/struts, pack / pinon, control arms & bushings, sway bars, tie rods, power steering pump and pullies. It sounds like it's coming from the driver's side of vehicle, my wife thinks it's the passenger side. I was driving slowly today listening to the noise and it sounds like it is coming from underneath the hood more than the suspension. But shops can't place or pin point the source of the noise. Front end suspension is tight no problems there, not sure what it could be??

It could be the control arm bushings. One on each side. They wear out after a few years.

You need to replace the sway bar end links also, they get very noisy but appear fine when they are on the car. Cheap on Ebay.e9253ba.jpg

Bmw 323i e46 making a noise coming somewhere from the engine i think

You will need to provide a little more info before someone can assist - when does it make the noise? All the time, only under acceleration, when turning left, etc? Can you locate it to the front or rear of the engine or to a specific component? There are mechanic stethoscopes that help with this. Can you describe the sound? A squeel, knocking, grinding? Good luck!

I rencently had the same problem. Lasted a week or two before it threw a code. Ended up just being a camshaft position sensor. Replaced sensor, now it runs like new. Just be careful with the crankcase breather hose, it's very brittle!

2000 BMW 323i - new clicking sound under the hood. Is there a common problem for this that I should investigate first?

Is the click engine speed related or is it a slow, regular (electrical) click?
Speed-related click could be many things - some of them expensive. No way to diagnose from here.
Slow click may be the heater valve. They sometimes sit and cycle with an annoying slow click when there is air in the cooling system.

Open the hood and on the strut tower you should see a black plate with silver or white lettering and some words written in German. Underneath the German words is a three digit code which is the paint code. Good luck!
