Question about 2007 Saturn Aura XR Sedan

Open Question

Where is the camshaft position sensor B on a 2007 Saturn Aura XR?

Check engine light is on. Computer scan came up with P0017 Camshaft Position Sensor B. I'm not sure where on the engine this is located. I think I found it but how can I be sure?

I hate to tell you this, but there is not Camshaft Position Sensor on any 1.9L Single or Dual OHC. I assume you had someone read a Diagnostic Trouble Code from your PCM. They probably told you that you needed a Camshaft Position Sensor, and then offered to sell you one. I would recommend changing your spark plugs and your plug cables with FACTORY REPLACEMENTS. This will usually make the DTC go away. Aftermarket plugs and wires rarely work well for this engine. If you are looking for a CRANKSHAFT position sensor, look between the engine and transmission on the back side of the transmission. It is also known as the "transmission input speed sensor". More often than not though, your engine will not fire up if the Crank position sensor is not working. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 2001 saturn sc2 gets code 341&340 camshaft sensor

if you have high resistance in secondary ign. system (plug wires, ign.coil) this will cause this code to set. make sure you are using a high quality spark plug wire set. not from autozone!!! and denso non platinum tipped spark plugs. also use a diaelectric grease on plug wires to keep moisture out.

2007 Cadillac 3.6L srx, check engi, code p00017 crank sensor - replaced, still running rough and giving me a misfire on 1,3&5. Changed plugs, still 1,3&5 misfire - 155000 miles, could it need new coil

155,000 miles This is not a DTC for the crank sensor . This is for variable valve timing .
DTC P0017: Crankshaft Position (CKP) - Exhaust Camshaft Position (CMP) Correlation Bank 1
The camshaft position (CMP) actuator system enables the engine control module (ECM) to change the timing of the camshafts while the engine is operating. The CMP actuator solenoid signal from the ECM is pulse width modulated (PWM). The ECM controls the CMP actuator solenoid duty cycle by controlling the amount of solenoid ON time. The CMP actuator solenoid controls the advance or the retard of each camshaft. The CMP actuator solenoid controls the oil flow that applies the pressure to advance or retard the camshafts.
Ignition voltage is supplied directly to the CMP actuator solenoid. The ECM controls the solenoid by grounding the control circuit with a solid state device called a driver. The ECM compares the camshaft position or the camshaft angle, to the position of the crankshaft.

Your a little out of your league on this ! Your best bet ,take it to a qualified repair shop !

• Inspect the engine for any recent engine mechanical repairs. An incorrectly installed camshaft, camshaft actuator, camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor, or timing chain can cause this DTC to set.
• An actuator that is in the full advance or retard position can cause this DTC to set.

So, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the codes are as follows.

P0017-Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor 'B'
Possible causes
- Mechanical timing fault
- Blocked oil passage
- Low oil level
- Faulty Exhaust ('B') Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor
- Faulty Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor

P0014-Camshaft Position 'B' Timing Over-Advanced or System PerformancePossible causes
- Dirty Oil
- Low engine oil level
- Faulty Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid
- Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid harness is open or shorted
- Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid circuit poor electrical connection
- Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM)

So in short, you can try the oil change if its been a while, always a good practice, however the fact that its throwing both of these codes together, makes me heavily suspect that your car is experiencing the worst of the possible causes, all your symptoms are tell-tale signs of your cars timing being off, meaning a timing belt job is needed. I highly recommend trying your best not to drive that vehicle, if the timing belt grenades on you while your driving, it will cause catastrophic damage to your motor. I cannot stress to you enough to limit your driving. Timing belt jobs as a general rule of thumb, are anywhere from $700-$1000 depending on the shop, anything more and they are ripping you off. Camshaft Position (CMP) Actuator System
The camshaft position (CMP) actuator system is an electro-hydraulic operated device used for a variety of engine performance and operational enhancements. These enhancements include lower emission output through exhaust gas dilution of the intake charge in the combustion chamber, a broader engine torque range, and improved fuel economy. The CMP actuator system accomplishes this by changing the angle or timing of the camshaft relative to the crankshaft position. The CMP actuator simply allows earlier or later intake and exhaust valve opening during the four stroke engine cycle. The CMP actuator cannot vary the duration of valve opening, or the valve lift.
During engine OFF, engine idling conditions, and engine shutdown, the camshaft actuator is held in the Park position. Internal to the CMP actuator assembly is a return spring and a locking pin. During non-phasing modes of the camshaft, the return spring rotates the camshaft back to the Park position, and the locking pin retains the CMP actuator sprocket to the camshaft

the common causes for code P0017 are as follows:
  • A faulty cam or crank sensor
  • The cam or crank circuit is open or shorted
  • The timing belt/chain is out of time
  • The cam or crank tone ring is slipped/broken

2.4L cmp sensor exhaust located upper rear of the engine near camshaft cover. 2.4L cmp sensor intake located upper front of the engine near the camshaft cover. the 3.5L cmp sensor located right side of engine compartment above the timing chain cover.below power steering pump.3.6L cmp sensor located right side of the engine near the front and rear.

Check engine light on my 2007 saturn aura xr. Codes read p0011, p0016, & p0017. Just where is the crankshaft position sensor located on the 3.6 engine?


a Honda Saturn. and zero post, i wonder why.
the Saturn (and honda) FSM both tell you how to diagnose all DTCS.
why not read that.
and btw, the codes never tell you what parts is bad but rather ,they only tell you which tests fails.
the tech will test the sensor and see that its good, (say) then finds the connector bad, saving $200 in useless parts.
or more.
RTM , READ the FSM, and read what the test does.
and get the freeze frame and see what is going on.
