My Kia Rio is struggling to get into gear. I have to be going at least 3000rpm before the gears will shift and sometimes have to completely turn it off to get it into first from reverse. Shifting whil

Being shut out of gear like that is an indication that your clutch is not disengaging even when the clutch pedal is down. Revving to 3000 rpm matches speeds inside the gearbox, in effect shifting without clutch action.

I believe your clutch cable is broken, unattached at one end or the other, or is too slack to release the clutch.

WHEN I PUSH IN MY CLUTCH IN MY 2002 KIA RIO IT MAKES A SQUEAKING SOUND, DOES THAT MEAN THE CABLE IS READY TO BREAK ?

The problem can be several things including the clutch cable, throw out bearing, or just a lack of lubrication.

I would start by checking the clutch cable. I attached a diagram along with the adjustment procedure for your reference.

Remove the cable from the clutch form and with someone inside the car and someone at the transmission end of the cable gently push down on the clutch pedal by hand. While this is being done the person holding the cable should feel for any binding or listen for any squeaking. If it is binding or noisy I recommend replacement rather than lubricating it as most likely the cable is already damaged and it is not worth getting stuck for an inexpensive part. If you do want to try and lubricate it you can get good cable lube at any motorcycle shop.

If the cable appears good gently move the clutch form back and forth to feel for any binding or to see if you hear your noise. If you do it will require removal of the transmission for further diagnosis.

When you reinstall the cable follow the adjustment procedure I attached to this string.

Clutch pedal box has snapped off its mounting on vw polo

1-disconnect battery. 2- remove all lower dash plastic panels. 3- disconnect all plugs on steering coloumn. 4- remove shear bolts on steering coloumn, easy with a long 8" sharp chisel (get 2 x new shear bolts £0.50p each). 5-loosen & remove bolt at steering rack in drivers footwell, mark position of spline before removing this makes it east to refit (tipex). 6- pull steering coloumn out towards you & it will slide off the bush quite easy. 7- loosen clutch cable adjustment & remove cable nipple at pedal. 8-remove clutch pedal. 9- pull brake pedal out of plastic insert, this will break there is no way to remove this without breaking the plastic clip. get a new brake pedal clip insert for a Mk 3 golf £4 its the same (dont let VW sell you a new pedal) 10- remove 5 x nuts holding pedal box to bulkhead/brake servo. 11- cut 2 x cable ties holding throttle wiring & disconnetc plug above heater on drivers side. 12- push/pull brake servo slightly out of bulk head. 13- remove pedal box.
Cause of the problem- The clutch bracket is only held to the pedal box with 2 x spot welds & a 10mm tack on the top corner.
Repair- Fully Weld the clutch bracket to the pedal box. Great repair.
refitting reverse of above.
Duration around 6/8 hours Less if you get the spare parts before you start.
I wasted time trying to remove the brake pedal without breaking the clip impossible to do even with theVW tool. £4 on a new clip is well worth it.

Replacing clutch gable

First you must get under the engine to unscrew the extremity of he cable fixed to the clutch lever. Once you are able to release this extremity of the cable, its done at one end and you must go inside your car. The best is to completely remove the driver seat. If you don't want to do it, at least, push it back to the maximum to have the most space you can under the driving wheel. It is better to get a good light (but small) to see (try to) what you are doing in this small space. The first thing to do once you are installed is to pull hard on the cable to get some loose inside. The isolation bushing should get out of its place. Once you think you have got enough loose (6 inches), have a look to the extremity of the clutch pedal, where the cable is fixed. With a long (one foot) flat screw driver, you have to push the extremity of the cable, really the cable, to loosen it from the extremity braket. Once done, with the same screw driver, you have to push the braket towards the front and the top. If you do it well, the bracket should jump from its place on the pedal. At this point, your cable is no longer attach to the clutch pedal. Then you noticed for sure that the extremity of the cable gaine is attached to a kind of plate which is welded to the two pedal boxes apart. The final thing to do is to push on a piece of black metal, on top of the plate, that prevents the cable sheath to be removed (it is hard to see but easy to do). Once done, you can remove the cable by pulling the cable sheath down and then pulling towards yourself. There are two bushing along the engine (or transmission) that guide the clutch cable from the pedal to the clutch. Before pulling everything off, make sure to remove those from their place.
