If you don't know there the thermostat is, follow top raditor hose to engine. There a housing there. Remove the 2 bolts. Watch the way you remove and install the same way. Should be diagram on the box if you forget. Do it when cold so don't burn.

Replace thermostat

You'll love this job!

The thermostat is behind the housing that is bolted to the lower intake manifold that the upper hose is attached to. With a little creativity you can pull this housing without pulling anything else. It does make it a little easier to pull the throttle body so that you have some more room to see and for fingers. you will need a 13mm socket, a swivel, a couple of extensions, maybe a 10mm socket, and a 13mm wrench.

P128 code keeps coming on about every 2 to 3 months, what,s the solution?

Hello kingsgo,

The P0128 is a code for the thermostat, it is common.

The ECM will set this code when the time it takes the engine to reach 176 degrees is out of the range that the ECM expects.

The fix is to replace the thermostat. Follow the steps below for removal and replacement.

1. Drain the necessary coolant from the radiator to be below the the thermostat housing.

2. Remove the alternator.

3. Loosen the hose clamp at the thermostat housing see 1 in figure below then remove the hose.

4. remove the thermostat housing bolts. See image below.

5. Remove thermostat housing from engine block.

6. Clean the engine block sealing surface.

The new thermostat will come with the complete housing assembly.

To install reverse above procedure, torque the thermostat housing bolts to 89 inch lbs.and fill coolant to the proper level and check for leeks.

I hope this helps.

My 2004 envoy sputters when I start it. I just changed all six spark plugs and it does the same thing. Check engine light is on. Handheld computer is logging misfires, P106, P128 codes. Lags and will...

The P0106 code indicates a problem in the MAP sensor area. Did you reconnect the MAP sensor connector after the plug change or seat it properly?
The P0128 code has to do with the coolant temperature not coming up to operating temp fast enough, this usually means the thermostat is stuck open.

My 2003 kia spectra comes up with P116 and P128 error messages. What do I need

p0116 is-- engine coolant tempurature ckt/range performance----- p0 128 is--coolant temp below thermostat regulating temperature. to fix these 2 codes are similar, change coolant tempurature sensor and thermotat all should be ok. make sure coolant in radiater is full. hope this helps you.

A code P0128 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

  • Low engine coolant level
  • Leaking or stuck open thermostat
  • Faulty cooling fan (running too much)
  • Faulty coolant temperature (ECT) sensor
  • Faulty intake air temperature (IAT) sensor

I have a 2004 GMC Envoy with 4.2 V-6 and I'm getting OBD codes os P128 and P526. Engine temp gauge is fluxuating between 170 and 210 degrees. Coolant level is fine.

these have an electronic cooling fan that has a high rate of failing. Dealer parts only, parts & labor about $700.00 to replace the cooling fan.
