Question about 1993 Geo Metro

1995 geo metro 3cylinder 5 speed

I am a new proud onwer of a 1995 metro W/3cylinderW/5 speed tranny I drive it every day but I can not down shift into first or second while it ia rolling .When I have come to a complete stop I then can shifht to first and then second and third..ect I have installed a new cluth kit thinking the pilot bearing was not slowing down????any HELP

    That doent make any sense the tranny will shift just fine through all gears from a complete stop no grind no bearing howl nothing (shifts like butter come a complete stop .I asked around (tranny shops)they said it could be 1-2 slider.I do not know what that is does any one????

Very common. We all have to learn to double clutch. I have driven my '90 at least 40,000 miles that way. When driving another vehicle with good synchros, now it seems weird to me and I "miss" the double clutching!

Sounds to me that the syncros in the trans are worn out. when driving and shifting try to vary the rpms while trying to shift . try to shift it like a semi truck just have to match the engine rpms to the trans input shaft rpm. this is not a cheap fix rebuilt trans or install new syncros in your trans requires the whole trans to be dissambled.

    this site will explain how your trans works with and without the syncro . the difference when your sitting still is the gears are not turning thus making it easy to engage the gear sets

    also you can try to doubble clutch to make sure its a syncro problem

    you push in your clutch shift to netural let the clutch out to match the shaft speed push in the clutch and pull into the next gear.

Manual tranny or Autotmatic.?
by speed i guess you mean veh. speed sensor. VSS,
on all 96 Suzuki's with the electronically shift transmission A/T there
are 2, vss sensors.
One in the speedo. and one in the transmission trail shaft.
why not post symptoms, or evidence.
like, my speedo MPH, is dead. or
my ECU reports VSS is dead. (DTC errors)
or my A/T is stuck in limphome mode and its showing DTCs for VSS2.
or I put a A/T ECU in to my M./T CAR?

the ECU uses VSS1 to calculate engine load ( very important)
THe TCM (tranny brain) uses VSS2 to shift electronically
if the TCM sees VSS2 fail, it switches to backup VSS1
and may go to TCM limphome mode and skip gears.

vss1 is clear there, seen as reed switch.
see that, that is VSS1, it clicks a magic count for every mile
you drive.
VSS2 , measures l tail shaft speed, true MPH, and can actually
see transmission slip, and warn you . VSS2 is very accurate.
in later years, VSS1 was abandoned. for obvious reasons.

Speed odometer

LSI 4cylinder or 3cylinder? engine. , all answer USA cars.
all answers now, are 3cylinder

did the odometer quiet too?

and in USA< connect any scan tool and see if VSS died.

the usa 96, 1.0L 3cyl has the VSS sensor in the speedo
and when the cable snaps, Speedo to transaxle flex drive cable.
the speed goes dead
the odometer goes dead
and Vss goes dead.
easy huh, if all 3 are dead.
but if speedo ONLY goes dead, that means ITS dead.
vss= veh.speed sensor. or MPH sensor.

Motor runs at 4000 rmp when started

the USA 1995 was the last car to use TBI injection (throttle body)
the LSI option, then had a 4 cylinder. in 1.3Liters.
and works totally differ. than any 1.0L
answsering for 1.0L

Have you inserted the Diagnostic jumper wire and looked at the
FLASH codes yet?
choke? on 95? what country is this, ours are not carbs. in 1995.
so post country. ours are all EFI in USA.
3 cylinder? 1 liter? or which engine/?
on any USA Metro, 1L , when first started, it has 2 valves. to control IDLE, (cold , is iAC) hot is ISC, The cold start valve opens farther the colder it is (how cold was it). but usually is limited to about 2000 rpm
this engine, TBI, uses a MAP to control fuel mixtures, and
any air leaks (aka; vacuum leaks) what so ever, will cause too fast idle.
so on MAP cars, you get to find out what is leaking AIR.
1995 has the new better , idle control speed motor, (ISC)
this can be stuck open.
that new TPS, did you do the calibration correctly?
it must set right. or idle will never be controlled.
finding the cause, takes hard work, and hands on testing
A/C fast idle broken
A/T transmission fast idle, device, broken.
Air leaks (add huge list of possibles and cracked hoses here)
Throttle stuck
ISC or IAC bad.
very hands on to find this, done many.
TPS on indexed corrrectly or not calibrated.

My 93 Geo doesn't shift properly

my guess is a bad governor.
bad throttle valve, on rear of tranny, either the cable one, or vacuum one.
the tests are all in the FSM and online at, for $15

I agree. It sounds like you are not going into overdrive or lockup.

Auto trans will shift some times and manual only

It may be just the vehicle speed sensor. Does the speedometer work OK? The vehicle speed sensor tells the computer how to control the shifting and it also sends a signal to the speedometer. Is the trany full of fluid, is it fairly clean? It should be red. Most vehicles, you check the fluid with the engine idling, in park.

95 geo manual tranny have had problem down shifting to 1st gear for couple months now 2nd is getting hard to downshift and upshift have replaced rubber bushings bolts etc.on shift linkage adjusted etc.

Sounds like your synchronization rings inside the tranny are wearing out try changing the transmission oil and adding product like lucas oil treatment , if it helps lay off the downshifting until your ground speed matches your engine speed for the gear your ring to go in. like really slow speeds ...

Automatic 1994 metro 3 cyl.tranny takes a long time to shift

Sounds like the converter clutch is engaging. Maybe converter selonoid? Should get put on scanner to be sure.
