Lift and support the front of the truck to get the wheels off of the ground. Grab the top and bottom of the suspected tire, and try to tilt the tire. (Pull the bottom, push the top, and vice versa) If there is any movement, the bearings are most likely bad. Also spin the tire and listen for any noise. Harshness, grinding, or growling noises are faulty bearings. Of course, removing the tire, brake caliper bracket, caliper, pads, and the rotor will give you a good look at the bearing assembly to inspect for metal shavings, and evidence of grease leakage. Your truck's wheel bearings are, I believe; sold as a complete assembly, and are fairly expensive. A detailed inspection is a good idea to make sure you are getting the right part, and they can be replaced as required, unlike brake parts that should be replaced in axle sets (both sides).

Just wanted to add. On most newer cars you anti lock breacking sensor is tied directly into your wheel bearing. In the event the bearing goes bad, there is a possibility your braking system will fail as it views the slop in the bearing much the same as an icy stop..

How do you check wheel bearings?

Most cars will go their liftime without a problem from wheel bearings. And they let you know when they go by billowing smoke out of the wheel as you drive, then it is too late, But the fronts are fairly easy, the rears, you cannot check, you have to go by ear, If they are grinding back there, they need attention, rear axle cars only, not front drive, the fronts are on a spindle that is easily accessed, Just rocking the wheel will tell you if it loose, but always listen first for for dry grinding sound, It will eventually get worse. Hope this helps.

Need to know how to install wheel bearings on a chevy cavalier

1) Break the torque on the center wheel nut and remove the nut and washer before jacking up the front end. 2) Jack up the front and remove the tire. 3) Remove the brake caliper and rotor. 4) After removing the rotor you will see the bearing assy. There are 3 torx bolts holding it on. You need to put the transmission in neutral to turn the hub and line up the hole to remove the bolts. 4) Knock it loose with a hammer and install in reverse order. The kit comes with a seal but I don't believe it's needed on a 96. Pretty simple job really... Good Luck.

AUTO: Vibration in front end of Nissan Altima

the problem could be a bearing on the drive shaft and not hub drive the car and see if u can hear a humming noise for the front also check and see if the front wheel is lose from the center nut if so the bearing in the hub is on the way out . is best to have some one change it as it needs to be pressed out { the old} and in the new . wit the drive shaft on the inner part of it their is an inner joint .this joint can wear and cause the steering wheel to virbate like if the wheels are out of blance not too pricey to do still best to have a pro to do it . best try the steps i provide here to find ur self as 9 time out of 10 u go to a dealer wit one problem and come out wit another . best of luck

How do I know if my front wheel bearings are going out in my car

Jack up the car (SAFELY) so one wheel is just clear of the ground.

Grip the wheel with both hands and see if there is any movement when you "pull / push" the wheel.

If there IS movement ..... you need new bearings.

Good luck.
