Question about 1991 Mercury Capri

Open Question

1991 Capri - the oil pressure gauge always reads low. Seller told me this was the same since new. Drives okay and oil looks fine. Is this a known issue with ford capri 1991?

Oil pressure gauge not working and it has low oil level some please explain this to me

A low oil level will cause the gauge not to work or read "low" because the sensor is designed to read pressure of the oil as it travels through the engine. Are you getting a message displayed as well ? I would start by making sure the oil is clean and at the proper level on the dipstick. If the oil level is low make sure you first fill it to the proper level then look for a leak. If the oil level is okay then it is possible the oil pressure sender could be bad. Good luck ?

Why does my oil pressure gauge on dash show low oil pressure when slowing . or during long drives when using low revs

The reason would be physics based. Low pressure can go down to under 10 psi. and be okay. What you do is hook up an external gauge and measure your pressure, both cold and warmed up. Your pressure may be okay.

On my 93 Dodge Caravan ES 3.3L, when it comes to a stop and idles (at a light mostly) the check gauges light comes on. When the check gauges light comes on the oil gauge is at the bottom. When I tap...

Okay What it means is that the oil in your car is either low in level or the oil pressure at low revolutions is low. I highly recommend you to stop driving the car when this happen because you can internally damage the engine with a low oil or a low pressure of oil. Check the oil level first..make sure level is fine and oil looks good. Black and burned oil will give you a low oil pressure as well. If it happen that your car need a oil change. Make sure you get it done and see if the problem goes away. Very rarely oils pressure sensor goes bad but if oil is new and level is fine you can take the oil pressure sensor and connect a tester for a oil pressure. If this is not under the manufacturer specifications.. oil pump is worn out and you have to replace it for a new one.
Good luck and don't forget to rte me. Thanks

I have a dodge ram van 250 1991. It seems like the reading onthe oil pressure guage on the dash has over time gotten so it is lower and lower, however, my spouse disagrees. It would be helpful to know...

Hi Harvey

this sounds correct to me, oil pressure on nearly all gauges should sit around the middle so 4 or 4.30 would be correct. Does the car have any issues at all or are you just concerned? a reading to high suggestes a blockage in the oil or "black death" as it's known in the trade this is caused by cheap oil builing up and being carbonated within the engine. the other side is when the oil pressure is low meaning the oil pump is failing and therefore not pumping to the top of the engine.

If it was mine I would be happy to say thats a healthy engine reading.

Regards and a god new year to you.

I may need a new oil sender/switch for my Capri XR2. My mechanic can't find the OEM one, it's discontinued. I have found some aftermarket ones with a range of 15-100 PSI. I read that operating pressure is...

I myself would go for the pressure sensor, should be located either on the side of the block or on the side of the side of the oil pan. If you're concerned about the reading, the aftermarket sensors you mentioned should work just fine.

Low oil pressure after engine has heated up.

With the car warmed up, oil pressure should be 1.5 kg/cm^2 @ 800 rpm. If your not getting that much, you may want to get an oil pressure gauge (mechanics type) to check it. 8d774a8.gif Using this type of gauge will give you an accurate reading. The stock gauge may not be very accurate, especially if the sending unit is old.

Oil gauge reading?????

okay if you look at the oil pressure gauge the is a mark right below the "o" in oil. once the car is fully warmed up, at idle the gauge should read a little before that mark. at full throttle the gauge should be around the mark to the left of the "H"
