Question about 1983 Buick Regal

1 Answer

I have a 1983 buick regal limited that is leaking oil from what I believe is the rear main seal. Tomorrow I am going to scoot the transmission back and check to see if there is oil around the flywheel . My question is once I remove the transmission which other seals/gaskets should I replace since I'm already gonna have the tranni out? Also does the exhaust manifold take a gasket

GM never uses exhaust manifold gaskets, it is a machined fit. The rear main may be two piece in this year, it depends on what engine the car has, you never say, if so you must remove the oil pan. Also if it is a one piece you need the installation tool to install the seal, if you don't do it right it will likely leak even worse.

Is it clear water or coolant ?
Clear water could come from the a/c or a drain for the cowl or roof.

How do I tell if my rear main seal is leaking in my 96 Buick regal

1. Are you losing oil? Have you been told this seal is leaking? This seal is located between the engine and transmission connection. This seal will be soaken wet with oil if failing. Your motor is probably the GM 3800 V-6...this motor is not known for excessive rear seal problems. Hope this helps.

When i turn on my 1983 buick regal it starts smoking from behind the motor some where and i cannot figure it out. what could it be?

Oil. if the smoke is coming from between the engine block and the firewall then its probably oil on the exhaust manifold. Make sure that your engine is not leaking oil from the seals and make sure the oil cap and dipstick are in place, start your car, with the hood up and observe the smoke if its bad then id take it to a mechanic but if its only mild then providing your engine isn't leaking oil it should burn off within a few minutes of the engine being started, i say watch the smoke because if it is leaking oil onto the exhaust in great amounts then it is possible it could catch fire.

1983 silverado rear main seal leak how to replace it

For this to be done you must purchase a rear main seal by visiting your local parts store and then you must incline the engine remove drive shaft, remove transmission mount, and remove the transmission then you are able to access the rear main seal.

My 1994 buick regal custom has a leak that we are not able to find. We have checked the oil filter, and the valves. Where else is most likely to be leaking?

assuming it is a 3.8 then look above the oil filter on the pump housing and around the front seal and timing cover you might also look at where the engine and transmission come together on bottom to see if the rear seal is leaking.
as a mechanic i would look for the wet clean spot .but it would help to know what side and what type of fluid is leaking.
hope this helps

1994 saturn sl2 automatic, with really bad oil leak.

There are only two paths for oil there. The rear main, and a oil galley plug a little higher up, about 2 o'clock.
