How do you remove a catalytic converter from a 1999 Nissan Pathfinder SE

There are two that i know of. Found the bottom three bolts could maybe cut off or cut exhaust below cats but the top i believe has 5/6 bolts that i cant see. What do i need to remove to get to top bolts and/or what is the easiest way to remove cats?

A 1999 pathfinder, there are six bolts on the top and three as you said at the bottom, i'm not sure if you are replacing them or just want the cats, anyway the way to remove is going to be a little tight and should be done from the bottom, using a swivel socket and extension you can do this from the bottom, sometimes heating the bolts helps a lot.

Testimonial: "Ty i was wondering if the covers needed to come off as it seemed the bolts went into the converters themselves. Ty again i will let you know how it goes "

Yes they are worth money. being a nissan they are wroth more, be careful as that some places will try to rip you off, these cats are worth about 80.00 each and maybe more. you will need to remove any heat sheilds and use swevil socket. or remove the manifolds or torch them off at the top if theres room, these are tough to remove as there is not much room, good luck, have a good day

A acetylene torch is what is needed to get them off. This is best left to a muffler shop

These cats are a real pain. You will need some swivel sockets and extensions and basically feel for them to remove them.

I will add that the aftermarket cats do not always work. We have run into this several times at the shop and end up replacing them with the O.E. part from the dealer.

I have a 1999 Nissan Pathfinder why can't I pass my emissions why

You must let your vehicle come up to temperature before having the test done. Run at highway speed for 15-20 minutes before hand. If that doesn't get you, maybe time for a new O2 Sensor/catalytic converter.

Pathfinder doesnt start

sounds like you are not getting any oxygen into your motor or you may have a bad Oxygen Sensor or maybe even a bad Catalytic Converter. I would also check my MAP and my Air Intake Control sensors

Location of starter in pathfinder 1998

I just did this last weekend. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the splash gaurd. It has to be removed from underneath the car so jacking up the front end is a good idea as it gives you more room to work. It's located on the passenger side, right next to the catalytic converter. You need to disconnect the plug and bolted on lead going to the starter. Just squeeze the plug and wiggle it out. You will see how it locks onto the starter. The other lead is just a nut. Now take out the two bolts holding the starter on. The top bolt is easy. The bottom bolt has a transmission line running right over top of it and you have to use a wrench making quarter turns to loosen it. It's tight but the starter will slide out between the catalytic converter and the front differential. Spaced is tight but not too bad of a job. Get yourself a Haynes manual and it has pictures to walk you through.

Bad catalytic converter?

Log onto www.partstrain.com. I believe they have Catalytic converters for your pathfinder for under $200.00, there OEM direct fit which means no cutting other then removing the old bolts.
If it is the Catalytic converter you can always buy it from on line and have a muffler shop install it like speedy or midas. Make sure you ask for stainless bolts and nuts.
Before you go through all the trouble, re check the DTC codes. Most of the time it's the O2 sensors that go bad and i question the garage charging you so much for the replacement of a catalytic converter.
Good luck and keep me posted.
