This is a toxic gas producted by the burning of gasoline, if the level in the exhaust is really high you may have engine problems.

You have an exhaust leak. Probably in the rear exhaust manifold. You should get this fixed right away as it could lead to Carbon Monoxide poisoning which could cause *****.

I have Armstrong hanging heater that I would like to install in my garage. I have 3" Type B pipe but the connection from the heater is only a 2" can I just slide the 3" over the 2" and call it good?

No. You need an adapter. Otherwise exhaust from the heater could build up in the gatage. Carbon monoxide is a colorless odorless gas that can kill you.

I think the switch is vacuum controlled and you may have a leak at the back of the switch.

The way this could happen is a leaking exhaust.

VAN SOUNDS LIKE ITS TRYING TO START AFTER I SHUT IT OFF

this is what we call "dieseling"
it is the engine running WITHOUT spark plugs

This happens when you have leaking injectors and carbon build up in the engine (pistons/valves)

try shutting off the engine while in park
keep your foot on the brake because you might find the engine has enough power to actually move the van

keep us posted

L get the smell of petrol ocasionaly ,and a rattle in the exhaust?

This could potentially be serious. You probably have an exhaust leak but if you're smelling it you could be getting a large dose of carbon monoxide which can be very dangerous to your health. It accumulates over time and you're body can't get rid of it. Carbon Monoxide (CO) can kill you very fast. You need to get the exhaust system checked out and find out if there is a leak.
