Glad to hear it. I do this on my own time and like helping others since i am retired, all I ask is that you rate my help for Fixya, this lets others know that i do know what I am doing when it comes to cars. If you had a couple of hours I would tell you the story of my 1982 Trans Am problems, and yours was one of them, a loose cable at the starter and then at the battey positive. The car was a royal pain as it aged, sunk $25,000 into it, was the quickest TA in this county.

This can be caused by a defective ignition starter switch, all power run from this switch to the fuse box. The switch is located under the dash on the top of the steering column tube and is operated by a steel rod that comes from the ignition lock cylinder which turn the switch on. The power into the switch comes from fusible links attached to the positive cable of the starter motor

You either have a dirty battery cable on the side post, check them even if they seem tight, very common issue. The other thing of course is a problem with the fusible link wires at the starter motor where the cars electrical system gets the battery power for all the rest of the chassis lights and accessories. It is one of the two.

When you fitted the altenrator have you left a wire off the positive battery terminal by any chance as it sounds like this is the problem ,you have forgotten to put all the wires back on the terminal

right if this is the case then shroud off the steering column and check for power to the switch on the ignition as the ohter expert was correct and sometimes the contact switch can fail the little half moon thing inside breaks off the drive then nothing .will work that runs through the ignition switch but if other things are working then it could be further down the line like the fuse board feed ,just have to get the meter or test light out and look for the break or dirty connectiion and eliminate the possible causes one by one

Fuel pressure? Do you hear the fuel pump running? Read the codes to see if ECM is still alive. Do you have spark at the plugs? Remember all motors need 3 things to run air, fuel, and fire at the right time.

Car wont start

I am sure you have checked the battery, if so & good, look at the starter solenoid, on the large battery stud there might be two wires, one is the battery cable, the other is the power feed to the car, if you have this wire they have a fusable link inline, follow the wire and verify you have power on both sides on the link. This will get you started.
