Question about 2004 Toyota Prius

1 Answer

Battery Twice this week I have needed a jump. It starts right up when jumped & I get a screen warning of, "Transmission [p] lock mechanism is abnormal", & to park on a level surface. But I was on a level surface. This has happened many times. Toyota has checked & said the battery is strong. Any suggestions??

No I don't have an audio system. I sometimes sit for a few hours & I keep the fob in the slot. Could that be causing a drain ???

  • fixitgranny Dec 20, 2008

Car fails to start. Service dept. says nothing wrong. Msg. transmission P lock abnormal flashes occasionally. Car OK for awhile after jump starting. Dealer says battery checks out OK,,,but might a new (stronger) battery solve the problem? Also, dealer ignores the zillion blogs about this same problem saying car not driven enough is causing it to fail. Not so...it has actually failed while driving. Thanks for any answers...dlange133@gmail.com

I have the same exact problem. Toyota diagnostics could not find a solution. I also have had a Warning light come on. The info screen shows a symbol that looks like a light with arrows on either side. What the heck is going on?

I have the same problem as Pzubres with the warning light that looks like a light with arrows on either side. Does anyone know what this is?

The audio system that I am speaking of would be "factory". The flat box is known to cause drain issues with the aux battery; you did not advise if you have one...And, leaving the fob in the slot will cause a slight drain, but not like you left the headlights on....

Regarding needing jumped: Question: Do you have the JBL audio system? Look under the pass front seat for a flat box. Feel it to see if it is warm...if so, the solid state latching relay has failed, and the amp is staying ON,draining your Aux battery. This is a known issue. Check this & get back to me.

Look under the front passenger seat. Do you see a flat metal box? If so, this is the amplifier for the audio system, and it is known by Toyota to not shut off completely, and this will drain the aux battery in the rear compartment. Feel the top...is it warm? Advise if you have this box for a solution.

I would request that the battery be replaced regardless. Ive replaced many a Prius battery that is too weak to start the car, and by the time it gets to the shop its charged enough to pass a test. Dont try for any stronger batteries, it is a special glass matt design and shouldnt be replaced with anything non toyota. The code is probably because the voltage is too low to run certain computers, and unlock the transmission. I would probably stop leaving the key in or near the car, that certainly doesnt help.

Why is battery draining ford 2002 Taurus SES

Remove negative cable from battery, connect a test light to negative terminal, opposite end off light to negative battery post. ( let sit for 3 to 5 minutes). Then start pulling fuses, when the light goes out that's your bad circuit. God-Bless! Its worth a try.

I have a 2006 mazda tribute , i replaced the altinator a week ago because the dash lights and headlamps were blinking on and off. replaced the altinator and it was good for a week.... now it is happen

Check for voltage at the battery with the engine running. If you have around or more than 14 volts than the alternator is working. If the vehicle starts with a jump and continues to run without starting than the alternator is doing its job. You likely need a new battery. Most auto parts store will check it for free. If the battery is bad replacing it sooner rather than later will be the best choice.

I have a 1999 chrysler cirrus and i jump started it and it started right up but when i turned the car off it wouldnt start again

took our kids 99 Cirrus to shop always had to jump the car. When mechanic was called he said he had traced a ground to under the fuse box.But now the car would not start or jump he said we need to reflash the computer. Took it to Chrysler dealer shop. They replaced distributor and computer 1300 dollars. They said it was fixed. Got the car back. Let it set for weekend. Tried to use it Monday morning would not start. Took the car back to dealership got a loaner vehicle. After a month dealership called and said the car had a bad battery. Now we had the kids replace the battery twice before we ever took it to the firsl shop. I think the car has a short draining down the battery and am considering a battery cut off switch to isolate the battery when not using the vehicle. Getting very discouraged and poor.

sounds like someone needs a new battery..
if the battery will not take a charge, or jump start, it usually means the battery cells are either dry or unusable, replace battery and try again

Car will not jump start

Check battery voltage. If volts are very low, put on charger. In many cases, you can't jump through a really dead battery... not enough voltage gets through to computer etc to make systems operate.
Battery may be used up... if it will not take a charge, replace it and check charging system before driving. PS: use a charger to charge battery. If it is very low, you candamage charging system in other vehicle. Also,,, You cleaned terminals already RIGHT???
