Can my spark plugs cause my car not to start if i need to change them?

I have a 1996 buick roadmaster and i drove it yesterday morning, and when i went out there to start it a couple hrs later and it wouldnt start. i took the battery up to get checked and they said the battery was good. the car makes a sound like its going to start but it wont turn over. the only two things i can think of is the spark plugs or maybe the starter. is there any way to tell if its 1 of those or which 1 it is and could the spark plugs cause it to not start? my email adress is kokilyn@aol.com

i have starting fluid to spray in the engine to see if fuels not getting to the engine? where is the air intake?

  • kokilyn Oct 29, 2008

i was going to change out the fuel filter because i dont think that theres fuel getting to the engine. when i changed the spark plugs i didnt really smell to much gas on them and i had someone listen and they said it wasnt the fuel pump. the only way the car is starting right now is if i spray the starting fuel in the air intake. if possible could you tell me how to change the fuel filter and do i need any special tools to do this and is it dangerous to change the fuel filter myself? i appreciate all the help you are giving me. thank you

i think i found the shrader valve but im not sure completely.can you tell me where under the hood its located and if it is the same size as a car tire valve or is it a little bigger? i found a valve behind the engine block around the fuel injectors but its a little bigger than a car tire air valve. i dont want to depressurize the wrong thing. thanks for the help, happy halloween.

You say the car sounds like it wants to start--does the engine crank when u turn the key? If the engine cranks (engine turns over is the same thing), then it's not the starter. so, if the engine is cranking over, u must check to see if you have spark at the spark plugs. It is possible for the car not to start because of bad spark plugs. How many miles since they were changed? Pull a couple out and inspect them to see if they need to be replaced. 1st thing to do is see if u have spark at plugs, then check to see if gas is getting to the plugs.

Do u have a owners manual? If u do, check it to see where the air filter is installed. U can remove it and use the starter fluid there. Be careful, it's highly flammable. If u don't have a manual, u can get one free from buick (download it). Go to : www.gm.com/gmownercenter/buick
Hope this helps, let me know if u need more assistance.

Ok kokilyn, u can change the fuel filter yourself, take the following precautions: Disconnect the negative battery cable (to prevent a spark while working w/ gasoline) The gas line is pressurized, so u must relieve the pressure 2 ways, 1.remove gas cap, 2. then look under the hood for a shrader valve (it looks just like a bicycle tire air valve, or car tire air valve, it's mounted on the fuel line rail), place an old rag under the valve, push down on the small round pin in the center of the shrader valve, a small amount of gas will be released. The fuel filter is under the car, driver side, in front of the gas tank, mounted on the frame of the car. Wear goggles to remove the filter. I had trouble removing one, and it came off while pulling to separate from fuel line, I got a spray of gas in my face, ended up in the e-room to have my eyes flushed out. Scary, but now I wear goggles to do it. To disconnect the fuel line @ both ends of the fuel filter, u will need a disconnect tool, it's a round plastic disc that releases the connection at the front and back of the filter. I've taken them off w/out the tool, but it's only a few bucks at any parts store. Ask for the correct one (size) for your car, and have them explain how to use it (it comes w/ several sizes and should have insrtuctions). Remove gas lines at filter, replace w/ new filter (make sure arrow points in the correct direction). replace gas cap, put cap on shrader valve, reconnect negative battery cable, turn the key, and it better start! Check connections for leaks.

What u found has to be it, it would be the only valve of that type besides what u have on your tires! It would be on the fuel injector 'rail', so that's it! And thanks, Happy Halloween to you!

SOURCE: need to know how to change an outer tie rod on a 96 buick roadmaster

you will need to back off on the lock nut on the tie rod end then remove the tie rod end from spindle turn tie rod counting the number of turns to take it off put new tie rod the same number of turns put back in spindle and tighten lock nut your steering wheel will probably be off center so you will need to have the toe reset on the alignment machine

What is required to change the plug wires on the engine's right bank on a 1996 Buick Roadmaster?

THIS VEHICLE HAS OPTIC SPARK DIST. THE PLUG WIRES RUN ALONG A CHANNEL BEHIND THE ALT AND A/C COMPRESSOR. THE WIRES MUST BE PROPERLY INSTALLED IN THE CHANNELS OR CHAFFING AND PINCHING WILL RESULT. VERY GOOD SYSTEM, JUST A LITTLE HARD TO REPLACE.

1996 Buick roadmaster start on hot sunny days but

use a water dispersant to clean out the distributor cap, HT leads and around the coil terminals. Check that there is no carbon tracks in the cap and that the plug leads are not touching each other . clean around the rubber covers at the plugs as any moisture there will short the HT spark directly to earth

Engine sputters when accelerating

The flashing light means the problem is serious enough to cause damage to the catalytic converter. Have the computer scanned for trouble codes to proceed. And get the plugs replaced.

Engine cranks, but no start

First let me say thanks for the effort for our country.
Do you know if the injectors are getting voltage and pulse ground, and if the plugs are getting spark ?
You need to know that to proceed.

The "change oil light" came on, on my 1996 buick roadmaster. i changed the oil but now how do i get the "change oil" light to turn off?

Turn key to "ON" position (NOT START). Press gas pedal smoothly and all the way to the floor 5 times. You'll need to do this in about 5 seconds. Light should go out. You may have to do this a few times but that's how it's done...Start car to double check.
Good Luck.
