Trouble with transmission shifting from 1st to 2nd

I just had my battery replaced yesterday and now all of a sudden it feels like there is a delay when my transmission shifts from 1st to 2nd gear. The delay is only felt between these 2 gears. Almost feels like it is slipping. Problem did not exist before replacing my battery.

What is causing transmission to only work in 2nd and 3rd and reverse.? in 2nd and 3rd it feels like its trying to downshift into 1st. In 1st there is a little resistance but it doesnt move


How does your transmission fluid look and smell? If it is dark and smells a little burnt, the transmission is very likely toast. If it is still clear and red, you should let a transmission specialist diagnose it.

Transmission shifts hard


You don't give me much information to work with. However, 1st, look at the engine mounts. You may have a broken mount. This will make it feel like the transmission is shifting hard. Other than that, there is only a few things that will cause this. The speed sensor tells the computer when to shift the shift solenoids. It may not be "seeing" a quality signal. If this is the case, the speedometer will be bouncing too. Last idea is that it is skipping a gear. Starts in 1st, should go to 2nd at about 10 MPH. 3rd at 25 to 30 MPH. And, if you have a Overdrive transmission, it should go into overdrive at around 45 to 55 MPH. If it is skipping 2nd, it will engage 3rd at a high engine speed, and will feel like a sudden slam into gear. If this is true, your transmission needs some work. Hope this all helps. Good Luck.

My 2001 GMC Jimmy 4x4 Automatic with 84K miles. It winds when I put it in reverse and I think I only have 1st and 2nd gear. Additionally it revs high, like over 3000 rpm, delays and then eventually...


It winds up in 1st and then shifts right from 1st into 3rd. Then never shifts into 4th. Plus rev is gone. You broke the sun shell. The transmission will need to rebuilt or replaced.

1994 Astro Van Transmission.....at cold start, transmission seems to shift fine...after a while there's a bit of delay when shifting from 1st to 2nd. Any ideas?


I would check the fuild level and make sure the fluid is bright red. You may also want to replace the transmission filter. Also check the modulator, if so equipped.

There is no TV cable, your transmission is electronic. Before guessing at transmission problems, check the fluid level (car warmed up, engine running in Park on level ground) and have the PCM scanned for trouble codes FIRST.

Secondly, put a line pressure gauge ( visit a local trans shop) on the pressure test port and go for a drive to verify proper line pressure. Base pressure at idle in P,N,OD should be around 70psi and around 140psi in R. Max line pressure should be at least 190psi at WOT in 1st or 2nd, 225psi is optimum. If base pressure is low, trans or pump is worn out. If max pressure is low, check EPC solenoid. If reverse is slow to engage, and line pressure does not come up to at least 130psi in reverse, replace the boost valve with a Transgo 0.490" boost valve (easy fix in pan).

1-2 shift does not happen at WOT until you let off the gas: Best case: try replacing the TPS. Middle case: leak in the 2nd gear apply circuit (servo assembly or 1-2 accumulator). Doublecheck by using the pressure gauge and watch for a big drop when the PCM commands 2nd gear. Worst case: poor line pressure rise.

1-2 Shift shudder at WOT; delayed or abnormal 1-2 shift; There's a problem ONLY on the 1-2 shift: 1-2 accumulator piston cracked or stuck cocked in the bore. Check the yellow spring inside the accum housing for breakage. Also, if the accumulator housing walls are scored, the housing must be replaced. Easy fix in the pan.

1-2 shift is delayed and harsh, may not shift into OD: Check TPS for smooth and linear electrical response over the entire range of motion. If not, replace.

Soft shifting, gradual performance degradation: Poor line pressure rise due to leaking boost valve, clogged EPC filter screen, failing EPC solenoid, or worst case: leaky seals throughout. Transgo HD2-C kit fixes first two without removing trans. Seal restorer may fix last problem, but probably R&R. Also try a transmission flush with BG brand products (Firestone stocks it).

1-2 or 2-3 shift is slow/soft above part throttle: Trans is on its way out. R&R.

COULD BE THE GOVERNOR WORN OR DAMAGED.I WOULD HAVE IT TAKEN TO TRANSMISSION SHOP.HE CAN RUN A DIAGNOSTIC TEST USING A SPECIAL SCANNER TO CHECK 1 - 2 SHIFT SOLENOIDS AND 2 - 3 SOLENOIDS.ALSO YOU COULD BE HAVING PCM PROBLEMS.IT NOT CONTROLLING THE SHIFTS.

Manual transmission will not shift into any gear, even when the clutch is completely depressed. It's a hard shift to begin with and now when i have to come to a stop and say move it out of 4th gear and try...


The problem sounds like the clutch. If you put it in 1st., then start it up, does it try to move with you foot on the clutch? Does the clutch pedal feel different than normal.

Transmission problem in E230 Benz


What you need to check is the transmission release bearing because if there is a clearance on the release bearing you will encounter this problem and also check the transmission oil.

Ram 1500 v8 auto wont shift from 1st to 2nd


your transmission is on its way out...if it shifts only sometimes you might try to change the filter and fluid but i dont know if it will help or not
