Question about 1994 Ford Ranger Supercab

1994 ford ranger 4x4 hubs make grinding/clicking noise after taken out of four wheel drive

My ford ranger makes a grinding noise in front end after taking it out of 4 wheel drive. I think it has to do with vacuum actuated hubs not releasing.

I think yours has the automatic locking hubs that slide over the the rotor hub. If this is the case than what has probably happened is a u-joint has gone bad and wiped out that auto hub.

Be prepared for some sticker shock on those hubs. they are not cheap. The usual fix for this is to replace the front axle ujoints and what ever hub is making the noise, hopefully just one.

Is your tyre's all the same size. Incorrect tyre's will change the racio from back to front and both driveshaft's are'nt turning at the same speed then it will grind. When trying to take it out of 4WD their will be preasure on the driveshaft's and this will leave if hard to disengage. Put it in 4WD drive it forward try the gearshift if it's hard to move then reverce a bit and try again it should come out easily. For all 4WD systems it is recumended thet the vehicle is reversed a few mitre's tto fully disengage the 4WD

SOURCE: fordf150 making grinding noise in the front

probably needs an "iwe" solenoid.
iths the vacuum solen oid that controls the 4x4 vacuum hubs,
they leak vacuum and cause partial engagement of the hubs.
thats probably the noise your hearing.
i think ford has a tsb 06-08-15

SOURCE: 4x4 vacuum seal in center hub not holding center

It could be the IWE ( Integrated Wheel Ends ) solenoid causing this. Here is the PDF version of the TSB from Ford
http://my.voyager.net/~sscully/file_tsb06_08_15.pdf

If you can check the vacuum lines from the IWE solenoid to the IWE, to see if they are cracked. Few others have had cracked vacuum lines from the vacuum reservoir to the check valve
Here is a block diagram of the vacuum lines.

Until you have time to check everything, pull the vacuum lines ( not the vent line ) on both IWEs, and cap them. This will leave the IWE engaged, so the gears do not get ground off ( if it is not too late ).

the 4x4 don't use vacuum. the front is auto lock when the transfer is engauged with the button. if the light don't which when pressed into 4hi or 4low. the motor on the transfer case maybe hung up. they have to be used at least 4 times a year not to go bad. the motor is on the back side of the transfer case. best of luck.

Front end noise

Assuming that you have already ruled out the brakes, severely worn engine mounts can transmit vibration and noises from the engine which are not normally heard. You don't say in what I see but is the vehicle two or four wheel drive. Since you mention CV half shafts I have to assume it is at least front wheel drive. If the vehicle is four wheel drive then there is a front differential with bearings in it that may be at fault. Have you done both sides when you say "hub assembly". Defective hub bearings will make grinding noises which will change tone or intensity when turning, accelerating or braking however the noise is usually fairly constant unless they are only just starting to fail. CV joints don't normally "grind" unless they are really bad. They usually make progressively worse "clicking" sounds or "clunking" sounds especially when turning hard, changing gears or direction of travel (forward to reverse and back again). Do you have non-stock tires/wheels? Larger/wider than factory spec tire sizes can rub the fender wells when the car is moving or turning. Another thing it could possibly be is the air dam below the front bumper. If it is loose it will push down in the airstream while the car is moving and rub on the ground.

Rubbing/grinding noise

Usually the strut bearing will make this noise upon turning a corner and hitting a rut or pot hole when turning. A wheel bearing will make a low pitched whinning sound constantly

If you are seeing the front drive shaft turn,Then it is in four wheel drive,
Your truck has automatic lock in hubs,The most common problem with Rangers is that the lock in hubs get worn and wont keep the axle engaged to the wheel,
If you go to Auto zone they have new lock in hubs for around $50.00
Or you could up grade and get hubs that you manually turn and lock in.

Auto locks for front 4x4 2007 f150 cant stop grinding noise

Are you under warranty? Make it the dealers problem if its eligible.

If the front hubs are grinding regardless of being in 2wheel or 4wheel drive it can be the hub bearings which turn regardless. If it grinds only when in 4x4 then the wheel shafts or differential or front driveshaft or transfer case is making the noise because all of these parts move when in 4wheel drive.

Put manual lockers in it. And remember, you have to back up 50 feet to lock in the hubs, automatic or manual. Not doing this could cause your problem.
