I had the same problems when my exhaust manifold (the part that connects the engine to the exhaust pipe) had a rust hole in it.
Basically there was a hole right under the engine where the exhaust was leaking out. This also let in moisture that made the engine hard to start in wet weather. I think this also throws off the pressure in the engine so you might notice that the car feels kind of sluggish.
I found a local mechanic who patched the part and I haven't had any problems at all. The car starts much better, the noise is gone, and the engine even feels like it has more power.
It's definitely worth getting it checked out ASAP because the exhaust can enter the passenger compartment.
Best of luck! I hope this helps out.
