Sounds to me like you drained your donor battery to the point where you can't jumpstart your car anymore. If you jump a car and it runs for a little bit but then dies that means your alternator is toast. If it was a bad ground, you would see sparks or a fire... Your battery only starts the car, once it is running your alternator supplies the electrical system and charges your battery back up. If you need more in depth help in replacing the alternator go to www.contour.org and get on the forums.

May i ask? when you jump start from doner car battery?? do you connect battery to battery with leads? reason for querie is the correct method is=connect leads to doner terminals on battery then on your car connect +LEAD TO YOUR BATTERY BUT THE NEGATIVE LEAD TO THE ENGINE ENSURE GOOD CONTACT ? if engine starts then ? you will have to check the earth lead from battery to engine connection it may be loose or deteriated ? doing the above test you are using doner battery power SO to check your cars battery ?and whether it is an earth connection fault? just connect 1xjump lead from your cars neg terminal on battery and the other end to the engine providing a good suplimentary earth to enable starter to function properly due to its high amps load needed if it works? check as explained above ? please update back on progress if any? good luck

My 98 Ford Contour won't start on its own. I can get a jump, but several electrical features still don't work and the power slowly seeps away. I noticed the negative cable hanging loose and can't find...

The negative cable needs to be solidly attached to a good ground point on the engine, NOT on the body. After you do this, check the alternator voltage output with the engine running. It should be around 14 volts, plus or minus 1/2 colt or so. If it is less than this, you will need to replace the alternator. This is not a trivial job with either engine, unfortunately.

Blinking batterylight

May be bad alternator, or battery. Most auto parts stores can test batteries and alternators for free. Have both checked. If alternator is not charging, a new battery will start great a couple of times, then it's run down and you are back where you began.

1998 ford exped v8 battery is good, but turn ignition key, battery goes dead. have a clickng sound in fuse box, battery will jump off and stay running but when i turn it off will not start back up

battery is low on voltage, it is either bad or the alternator is bad. after you jump start check volts at the battery . if volts are below 13.00 the alt is most likely bad. if volts are about 14.00 alt is good. battery is bad.

Ford Contour possible short

Check the alternator is not faulty.
The battery terminal voltage when engine is running should be approx 14.5V with headlights or venilation blower motor running.
The battery light indicator 'on' usually means the alternator is not charging.

While I was driving my 1999 ford contour se, I RPM gage began running at 5,000 and the speedometer jumped to 80 mph while I was in park. I then heard a low buzzing noise coming through my radio. My car...

Start with changing the alternator. If it continues after that try to find a used computer from a wrecking yard. The ECM/computer is very expensive at the dealership and your local autopart store can't order them.
