Question about 1988 Toyota Tercel 2 Door

90 Tercel Won't Start

Intermittent problems with it starting up because if the brake isn't pushed down completely, the car floods when starting. So far just time has gotten it started up, but occasionally it sputters and coughs when turning off.

No problems at all the past couple of days, working like a dream.

Then we hit a cold spell, and now it won't start. I'm told it turns over, but it won't actually ignite and start the car.

Other items that may be of interest:
- When I bought the car, I was told the previous owner only used premium gas in it, and that it "seemed to like it" a lot more, and therefore only use premium. I didn't, because a mechanic told me it was a waste of money - but now I'm reading this is a common issue with this car, and premium is most definitely the way to go.
- Low kms (less than 120,000)
- Had full inspection done on it two months ago, all fluids topped up, everything looked at, nothing was amiss other than a cracked CV boot that was fixed.
- Has been suggested to me that I should put some sort of cold weather additive into the tank to see if that'll help; also been suggested to plug it in - but the guy who was driving it when it stopped working can't seem to find the block heater plug. I'm sure there is one; it was hanging out of the grille when I bought it.

You do not need high octane gas unless the engine pings when under load. 
You did not say if it was cold and damp but I am guessing that it either was or a high humidity in the air . The engine gets warm then it condensates inside the cap. I beleive you should tune up the engine before doing anything else. It cannot hurt and it may improve miles per gallon also. Replace cap and Rotor and also replace the plugs and wires. If I were a betting man I would bet that  this wil cure your problem.

Could be as simple as a dead cell in your battery or as serious as a computer problem. GM has a long record of the security passlock system malfunctioning as well causing intermittent starting issues.

My '95 Tercel won't start

clutches don't pump up unless there is air in the system. Check the slave cylinder for oil leaking. There may be a switch that has to be in the correct position to allow the system to start and unless you can activate it when the clutch is disengaged it will ne difficult to start. I would also check the battery with a load test as bad cells will not give a high enough crank speed to fire the engine

My brake light won't turn off even if my foot

Your brake switch is just hung up. it is located directly above the brake petal and is attached to the petal bracket-use a flashlight and get down low enough to see up under the dash where your brake petal is, it will be hooked onto the petal bracket-just move it, it is probably just mis-aligned.

My 2008 Nissan altima will not start sometimes usually it happens when you put your foot on brake before you start it and the brake pedal won't release back does anyone know what the problem is

do the brake lights come on when you press the brake? If not the brake switch is bad. If they do, check your brake fluid. Ive heard of these Altimas having bad master brake cylinders. If your brakes(pads) are good and your fluid is really low, this may be your culprit. Should be covered under warranty.Let me know how you make out.

The car won`t start in an intermittent manner. When I turn the key the acc. goes off but I hear no relay. It`s as if I wasn't pushing the clutch down. When it does that I wait for the next day, and it`s...

Check the battery connections to make sure they are clean and shiny by brushing with a wire brush. Intermittent starting problems can be traced to dirty battery connections.

My 1995 Toyota Tercel is having trouble starting. When it does start it smells like it is flooding itself.

sounds like the fuel presure regulator is pooped or vac line fell off of it

My toyota tercel 1990 has same flooding carburetor problem help

spray some carb. cleaner down the air intake hose if it, in fact run have someone start your car as you spray cleaner and the person who starts the car give it some gas and try to equal the revs.per spray of cleaner try not to let it die so the suction can clean out you intake also make it a good habit to run proper gas treatment frequintly. do that as many times as needed
