Brown to the tail lights. yellow to left turn signal. green to right turn signal. this is a basic 3 wire hook-up i use all the time w/4wire connectors for all trailers. white wire is not used. ground is established when you hook to the ball.
to find the correct wire to splice to, use a testor (has a clip to the bare wire, and a sharp point to the truck frame). using a needle, push it through a wire to rear light harness. turn on the turn signal. check if the connection is the blinker, testing until you have the blinker wire. the tail lights can be attached to the license plate wire. brakes and blinkers use same wire, so brake lights will work whenever the turn signal is attached.
to be sure everything is working right, have a second person go inside the truck and work the signals, brakes and lights one at a time while you are at the back of the trailer telling what to do.

There is a tail lights fuse for the truck, but not for the trailer.
First, check that your left tail light on the truck is working, if not fix the problem (new bulb, bad contact, fuse).
Then the obvious suggestions regarding the trailer are: Check the tail light portion of the bulb to be sure it is not blown. If good (best to put in new one to be sure), then check the wiring from the front of the trailer all of the way to the non working bulb, including every connection and at any place it is secured to the trailer frame. If all is good with the trailer circuit and bulb, then check the truck's trailer connector, including any adapters. If by chance the truck is wired with a flat 4 wire harness the problem may be solved (but usually the blinkers are the problem). Modern trucks require a 5 wire harness which self adapts to the standard 4 wire trailer circuit. Check for dc power (12 volts) from the truck's female connector. One wire will be ground, others will be taillights (turn on headlights), brake lights (have someone press brake pedal), and blinkers (turn on switch and blinkers).
brake lamps and parks are swapped brakes are the high current lamps and much brighter. you have them backwards. AH ! LED lamps and you really mean the brake are too dim,,and parks are too bright. and what is it not.? it's not the jeep putting out too much voltage to TAILS. sorry its 13.3v to 15v running, on all cars.
what is it.? well the lamps for tails/blinks are low power LED lamps. (like there relic cousins) and brakes are higher intensity LED lamps (by LAW) same with incandescent, (LED dont change DOT laws on candle power, sorry)
Follow the wire back up under the hood to see where it is connected. Sometimes there is an external circuit breaker or the wire may go into the fuse box under the hood It just depends on who installed it.
You can buy replacement taillight bulbs with wiring pigtail wiring hanging out of the side of the bulb. You'd use them to replace your existing taillight bulbs and connect your trailer harness to the pigtail wires. You may need to drill through the taillight housing to get the harness wiring in to the bulbs - if you have to do that, seal it back up around the wiring with RTV silicone.
That's a lot easier than tracking down each wire, probing it to find out what it does, and splicing into it with pinch splices (which aren't very reliable), then periodically replacing the pinch splices that've gone bad and made your trailer lights fail. You can make a pretty good splice to the pigtailed taillight bulbs, and it's really easy to tell what each pigtail does - brake/turn or park light.
The 4-wire flat plugs usually have a white (ground), green (right brake/turn) yellow (left brake/turn) and brown (taillights - left and right). If your brake and turn lights work but the taillights don't, check the plugs (trailer and truck sides) for corrosion, and chek both the trailer and truck wiring harnesses for chafed insulation and bare conductors on the brown wires. Likewiae if the taillights work and the brake/turn lights don't, perform the same checks on those wires. And last but not least, be sure that the white wires (truck and trailer) are grounded well to the truck body and trailer frame.
there is no need to splice wires especially on a 02, you can get a trailer harness at any autoparts store that will connect into your original harness. Dont get me wrong you can splice into it but do you really want to ??
