Question about 1991 Toyota Camry

1991 Camry wont start in cool humid weather

Won't start on cool foggy mornings. Started this morning, but I forgot my lunch inside. So I turned it off and when I came back 5 minutes later it wouldn't start. Brake gets hard to press down after it won't turn on. Just replaced starter motor and ignition. All the dash lights light up and radio comes on.

Anne, it sounds to me like dampness in the ignition process, if the engine is turning over at the turn of the key, then check the rubber ring seal inside your distributer cap(thats the coloured plastic cap with all the leads to the spark plugs) if its perished or showing signs of distortion, replace the whole cap. if its seems ok then try starting your engine at night or at least grey dark, open the bonnet and watch for sparks coming from any of the HT leads ( cable like things) that go to the spark plugs. If present either spray with "sparkseal"(short term solution) or replace the leads.Try this and if it doesn,t solve it , get in touch ok?

I'm pretty sure you triggered your vehicle alarm / immobilizer. Surely you know how to reset it, right? Is there a button on your key fob that does that?

When won't start try removeing the gas cap (slowly) to release any pressure in tank. Let me know if this helps.

1994 camry won't start after cleaning under the hood check dist. cap replaced spark plugs sounds like its going to start then doesn't.

Sounds like wet or moist spark plug wires. If this also occurs during early morning high dew point humid air, then you may have spark plug wires shorting out.

Replace wires.

I would think that the fuel pump one-way check valev may be malfunctioning; or, you just may need a new set of plugs and wires, a cap and a rotor.

I would check 1) the fast idle thermo-valve. 2) the starting air valve, and 3) the IAC valve. The IAC valve and the Fast Idle valve are on the front of the cover that has PGM-FI on the top. They are connected at the bottoms by small water hoses. The starting air valve is at the right hand end (facing the car) of that cover. All of these valves affect you starting air mixture, in one way or another. They get dirty, or the vacumn hose to the starting valve make start leaking.
You will probably need a manual (Haynes) to go through checking procedures. It has good pics and describes what to do.
Hope this gets you started on a fix.

Whats going on

most likely the problem is you have blowby. the oil is coming up past your worn piston oil rings which is causing oil everywheres. start your car and remove the oil dipstick and see if oil comes out. if not you need a engine rebuild or new used motor which would be cheaper in the long run.
