Sounds like the lock mechanism is stuck on the locked position. Since you didn't specify make and model this is a best guess. Make sure the lock is in the unlock position and try manipulating the rod connected to the outside handle (since child lock is on the inside handle won't work)

98 Ford Explorer Door Problems- how to open without panel removal. inwinblades .... HELLO panel removal??? door won't open... Been searching all ... ok this better work on all doors, im aboutt o try this on my rear passenger door. .... I didn't care about the plastic door handle so i just "busted" it to pieces.
Visit an on-line parts supplier and purchase a new switch/touchpad for inside of the rear handle. Local parts supplier probably won't have it. You can replace it yourself. I did when I owned one of these part pits.
Common fault on this car, the inside of the back of the door handle has either came off or broken off, I know it might sounds daft but lock and unlock with the remote and get someone to pull hard on the door handle, they often jam then this snaps the plastic clip inside the rear of the handle.
also try having someone sit on the inside and do the same to get the door open whilst consatntly using the lock and unlock on the remote fob. Otherwise I would recommend putting it in a garge as removing the door card with the door shut is a bit of a nightmare and most likely will end up damaging the panel caosting you more.
