SOURCE: what is the timing set at for a 1991 Camero 305 V8 ?
Try 0 degrees. It should state it on the radiator cover, but mine didn't. I tried 10 advance and it started real hard. I think you need to disconnect the single wire terminal near the distributor/coil that sticks out of your harness wrap before you set timing and reconnect it afterwards. That's what I recall from my TPI car and this TBI car seems to have the same electronics. Good luck.

A knock is not good. Does it change when you put the car in gear? Is it loud enough to hear at idle? If it changes in gear then it is a possible cracked flywheel. If not you can idle the car pull the plug wires 1 at a time to see which one changes the sound. This will tell you which cyl has the problem. If it changes pulling the wires then it is an internal engine problem, get ready to spend some money, sorry. Good Luck.
SOURCE: timing marks and adjustment
The timing marks are located on the crank and cams,to get to them the fan, water pump, timing cover, and a few other things must be removed.
If you are just wanting to adjust the timing,(And the timing chains are not broken or jumped)You will do this at the distributor and you will need a timing light to do it correctly.
SOURCE: 1992 chevy caprice with 305 has a 44 trouble code.
Code 44 indicates a lean condition as indicated by the Oxygen (O2) sensor, most times the cause is a bad Oxygen sensor and replacing it solves your problem. But sometimes your sensor is reading properly and your engine is experiencing a lean condition caused by a vacuum leak or low fuel pressure.
