Since you have the same 4R100 as the 7.3L I recommend checking the resistance of the solenoid connectors, it is like sonic said at the rear passenger side and it will be hiding under some flexible heat shielding (it is next to the exhaust pipe afterall..). Specifically, take the resistance (ohms) from pins 1 to 4 doesn't matter which is black or red. It should be 10-20 ohms. You also might have to put a jack under the transfer case, unbolt, drop the support beam and let the whole drivetrain come down a bit for decent access. These pins should be labeled but pin 1 is in the row away from the tab and is the rear-most pin. Replacing the solenoid body is $200 and a pan drop. Grab a few gallons of Mercon!

What engine do you have in the truck

Posted on Oct 25, 2008

  • Anthony DiVeronica Oct 26, 2008

Ok, i usually only work on the ford diesel drive lines... seeing as how you have the v10 gas engine im assuming that you prolly have the same trans as the diesel. if the truck is an 04 or newer then the tft ( trans fluid temp) sensor is prolly bad (normally gives hard shift and no over drive). If it is an 03 or older then the tps (trans position sensor) plug/sensor is prolly corded and not making good contact. The tps is located on the driver side of the trans and ware the shift cable hooks to the trans shift lever. it is a black sensor with a white center that turns with the movement of the shift cable. If the plug and sensor have green pins then both must be replaced. If you inspect the plug and sensor and see no green terminals then look at the tranny solenoid body plug. this is located on the passenger-side rear of the tranny. It is a grey plug that goes directly into the tranny. if the plug is corded then you should get a mirror to look down into the solenoid body terminal and inspect the pins. if they to are green then the solenoid body needs to be replaced as well as the plug. these are the most common causes of the O/D light of the shift lever flashing. All of this is assuming that you have the 4r100 trans on an 03 or older tk or the 5r110 trans on an 04 or newer tk... please let me know how you make out

Manual transmission

The short answer, yes. M46 models with the type J or P overdrive (depending on year and market) require a certain level of oil in the overdrive. Additionally, the overdrive is a lot like a standard automatic transmission with one gear range in theory of operation. Therefore, the hydraulic properties of said transmission do come into play here, line pressure, shifting pressure, accumulator and piston function all work together to engage or disengage the unit. Always ensure the unit is disengaged before downshifting and of course, shifting into low reverse.

Got a 1995 F350 dually and the overdrive light flash sometime. When it does it make the transmission shift hard. If you stop and cut truck off the light go off. So what is the problem?

sounds as though the wiring harness to the trans may need to be inspected to be sure it is in good order and the connections are seated firmly.
I am assuming the transmission is not the issue.
I am thinking maybe a branch or something snagged a wire harness and jiggled it loose maybe?

What is the o/d button on top of automatic gear stick for please

Over Drive..... Generally speaking, overdrive (OD) is the highest gear in the transmission. Overdrive allows the engine to operate at a lower rpm for a given road speed. This allows the vehicle to achieve better fuel efficiency, and often quieter operation on the highway. When it is switched on, an automatic transmission can shift into overdrive mode after a certain speed is reached (usually 70+ km/h [43+ mph] depending on the load). When it is off, the automatic transmission shifting is limited to the lower gears. For an automatic transmission, it is almost always best to select overdrive and allow the transmission to control engagement of the overdrive. (It may be necessary to switch it off if the vehicle is being operated in a mountainous area or when towing a trailer.) With a manual transmission, overdrive should usually be selected when the average speed is above 70 km/h (approx. 43 mph).

I have a light on my dash that says o/d off

i assume that you have a sentra 1997 automatic transmission. OD orange light on your dash means that your overdrive is not engaged meaning your sentra is not on fuel efficient mode.

solution: in your automatic stick shift, driver side is a button just below the T bar. press that button until the OD light dissapears on your dash. you're now in overdrive mode.

Shift letters for a 1992 chevy 2500. what does each mean?

The D inside of an O is for overdrive. It is an automatic overdrive transmission. There isn't an overdrive button on it. If you want to disable the overdrive you have to shift down a gear.

the flashing overdrive light indicates a code for the transmission you need to have your codes read to see what is causing the problem

Transmission slipping

do u have any transmission trouble codes? u should if the OD light is flashing, the light flashes to alert u that a electronic malfunction is occurring in the trans controls, u may just have a bad trans connector or a shift solenoid starting fail due to a shorted field closing coil.

Tranny swap

You can swap a AOD trans in but is not a heavy duty unit. The E40D is but all electronc and would be expensive.
